1/7/07--  Jacob is apparently ready for BOTH a big boy bed AND potty training.  During his nap today, he started yelling for his mommy a little earlier than expected, so reluctantly she got out of bed herself and went to check on the little guy.  She walked in to find him STANDING on the side rail of his crib.  She ran over to him to grab him and he started to point to the diapers and say, "Ewww!  Ewww!"  At this point, Jessica noticed that Jacob was not wearing a diaper and that he had pooped.  After getting him changed and sending him off to his daddy (and after changing her clothes as well), Jessica noticed that the crib was filled with diapers and toilet paper.  Jacob had taken off his diaper and tried to wipe himself and had rolled the diaper up just like mommy and daddy do.  He had hit a snag when trying to put the diaper back on and had peed everywhere.  We just installed a safety gate at the top of the stairs, so we'll attempt to get Jacob sleeping in his own bed tonight.  As for potty training... maybe tomorrow (yikes!).  Two other accomplishments were that he said "rock" and "hat" today.

1/3/07--  We set of for grand adventures today but only managed to have small ones.  It was a lovely day today so Jacob played outside most of the morning.  The family went to Laguna Beach for lunch and Jessica's doctor appointment and had plans to go play at the beach as well.  Unfortunately, Jake fell asleep in the car before we could make it back to the main beach parking lot, so we just enjoyed the scenic drive home.

12/30/06--  This morning Jacob gave us quite a scare.  He was running back and forth from his bedroom to our bedroom while we put away his laundry in his room when we suddenly heard a crash followed by crying.  Jacob had tripped and fallen and hit his forehead on an open drawer.  When Jessica went to pick him up, he had blood running down his face and was crying hysterically.  She ran to the bathroom and grabbed a roll of toilet paper and stuck it to the cut on his forehead.  When the crying stopped, she lifted the TP and saw that it was only a little cut and a quarter-sized bruise.  Jacob still needed some cuddle time to feel better but was soon using his flashlight to interview his animals.  Once that trauma was over, and the family was playing downstairs, Jacob saw a picture of a baby and said, "baby!"  He knows where his mama's baby is, so we're working on knowing the baby's name.

12/28/06--  Today Jacob said "light" to get us to turn on the lamp. At dinnertime, after eating some apples, he tried to ask for peas.  We were all in the kitchen making dinner when he pointed to his dirty dish from lunch and said "pah."  Kris said, "Do you want peas?" to which he said, "Yes!"  We didn't even know he knew that word!

12/26/06--  Merry Christmas!!!  All is well again in the Rhodes home and so today we're opening presents.  We'll be posting pictures soon of Jacob playing with some of his toys.  UPDATE:  While we've been traveling, Jacob has picked up a ton of new words.  He's learned: up, down, yes, no, on, off (seeing the trend?).  Not only does he call monkeys "ooh oohs," but he now calls dogs, "woof woofs."  This morning he made up a new sign for fan.  He came up to Kris making the "help" sign and then proceeded to whirl his arms around like he was swimming.  Kris asked him, "Help what Jacob?  What do you need help with?" at which point Jacob grabbed Kris by the finger and led him into his room.  He then pointed to the fan and signed "help" and began his swimming motion again.  Jacob wanted Kris to turn his fan on.  (For anyone who has not seen Jacob recently, let me add that Jake has an almost OCD interest in fans of all kinds.  At home, he wants his fan to be on at all times.  In restaurants, he spends the entire evening staring at the ceiling instead of eating or coloring.)

12/25/06--  Today is not Christmas.  Jessica is too sick to even come down stairs, so Christmas has been declared postponed.

12/21/06--  Back to California!  We left at 2:00 Texas time and arrived at 4:50 California time.  Jacob slept the entire flight from Dallas to Orange County so Jessica and Kris didn't have to keep him entertained.  Upon arrival, the family was dismayed to learn that their bags were still in Dallas and would not arrive until later, but luckily Jessica packed her TSA uniform in the diaper bag so she could get changed and ready for work that evening.  Uncle Mark came and picked up the boys and they all spent the evening hanging out at Mark and Bridget's house.  (The bags were on our front porch the next morning.)

12/20/06-- After a day of laundry and packing, Debbie came over and we all went to dinner at Los Tres Amigos.  We then headed over to the Fantasy of Lights at Midwestern State University.  Jacob was mesmerized!  It was really cold, so we kept him bundled up in his stroller, but he was really interested in all of the moving, lighted displays.  He seemed to like the dolphin jumping through the hoop the best.

12/19/06--  Grandma and Jessica went shopping for the day, leaving the boys behind.  Kris and Jacob walked to the Dairy Queen for lunch.  It rained the whole day, so this was not as pleasant as one might think.  Cindy came over after work to see Jacob and he was pleased to show off his new falling in the floor skills.

12/18/06-- Today we all met Gram and Aunt Paula at J.C. Penney's for pictures.  We now have photographs with everyone.  (Just in time for round two...!!!)  Jake was holding back his smile but we got a few when he let his guard down.  We ate at Fat McBride's for lunch before Gram and Aunt Paula had to head back to San Antonio.

12/17/06--  This morning Jacob, Jessica, and Grandma went to the Methodist Church in Holliday.  Jacob got to meet a ton of new people.  Grandma took Jacob down to the front of the church for the children's sermon and he answered some very important theological questions--the language in which he answered has yet to be determined, however, so I'll have to get back to you on that.  For lunch, we met up with the Rhodes clan and went out to eat at Pioneer.  Everything was wonderful!  We all went back to Grandma's house and talked as the boys played with their toys. Mr. Kusano from Grandma's school came by with his wife to drop off a couple of toys he made for Jake.

12/16/06--  What a big day!  Jacob was visited by Grandad, Grandma Linda, Mommy-O, Daddy-O, Aunt Melody, Cousin Jonas, Gram, Aunt Paula, and Auntie Lisa and Uncle Johnny.  They all came over to Grandma's house for soups, appetizers, and desserts.  Jacob was shy around all of the unfamiliar people, but quickly warmed up to the crowd.  Jake really liked playing piano with his cousin, Jonas.

12/15/06--  Today the family went into Wichita Falls to get haircuts for Jacob, Jessica, and Grandma-- have to look good for those visitors tomorrow!  Grandma took Jacob to her school and introduced him to everyone there.  On the way home, the family got to eat at Sonic.

12/14/06--  Today the family went to eat at El Chico's and then to pick out a Christmas tree.  Jacob had a great time running through all of the trees at the Drummond's farm.  We intentionally dressed him up like a little lumberjack, but he didn't seem to mind.

12/13/06--  Today the Rhodes family left for Texas.  Jacob was very good on the flight and all went well.  There was a short layover in Dallas before heading off to Wichita Falls and once on the flight, Jacob decided to take a nap.  We arrived.  Our bags arrived.  Grandma Ethel Arrived to pick us up.  On the way home, we stopped by Braum's for food.

12/10/06--  Now Jacob can say "bowl."  He wanted some of his mommy's food, but not just on his tray, in his bowl.  How civilized...!

12/6/06--  Jake's working on more words!  He's sort of able to say shoe ("doo").  He can say "night night."  He's sort of able to say milk ("mook").  He's getting good at repeating words.  He loves to chase down "Numie" and "Momo," aka Sumie and Tomo.  He now calls his monkeys "ooh ooh."

12/4/06--  Jacob and his mommy have been sick this week.  Mostly undaunted, the pair have been sipping juice and eating soup.  Jake always steals all of the carrots, though, so FYI, he's not great at sharing the good bits.

12/1/06--  Jacob has been working on his "o" sounds.  He can now say "Elmo," "no," and "Tomo."  With our cat's name, Tomo, he mostly sounds like he's saying "mo mo," but I figure that's close enough.  After all, it IS a Japanese word (momo means peach)-- just not the right one (tomo means friend).  He also says "du" for "shoe,"  We've been working on getting him to answer yes or no to questions instead of just saying "Uh huh" to everything like he usually does.  He's now combining words, but so far it's just been "uh oh" plus either mama, dada, or Jacob.
