9/18/06--  Jacob is 18 months old today!  He started his day by getting breakfast and a bath from Daddy.  Then we went to deliver some baby things to Auntie Bridget and Uncle Mark.  Then we headed over to JCPenney's to get milestone pictures made.  Jake was a shy guy and didn't want to smile much, but he did a great job.  He fell asleep on the way home and napped for two hours.  Then Daddy came home and they played outside for a long time.

9/10/06--  When asked, "Where's Daddy?" Jacob points to Kris; when asked, "Where's Mommy?" Jacob points to Jessica; when asked, "Where's Jacob?" he proudly pats himself on the chest, smiling.

Mom's in Las Vegas right now.  Ever the good Methodist, she is refraining from all gambling.  She says.

She has asked me to post updates about what happens with me and Jake while she's gone.  Never one to blog, I shall nevertheless make the attempt.

Jake and I spent the day yesterday driving up the coast from Long Beach (where we dropped Mom off) back here to Irvine.  We stopped at a Mexican restaurant, where Jake had some beans, some rice, some goldfish, and some ice.  Those are four of his favorite foods, so all in all he had a good time.

Then in the car, Jake fell asleep.  I took this rare opportunity to pull into a Barnes and Noble and catch up on all my science magazines and what not.  If you read the magazine without buying it, is that stealing?

Jake woke up to interrupt my reading of a very interesting article on the evolution of morality.  As a reward, I took him to the children's area, set him in front of the books that make noise, and let him go at it while I finished my article.

Once we had finished with our respective fun activities, we left and drove the rest of the way home.  On the way, I saw a sign that said "Art Museum" with an arrow pointing off to the right.  I followed the arrow, but found only an upscale shopping mall called "Fashion Island."  I got out of there fast.  The location of the art museum remains a mystery to me and Jake.

Today Jake is going to help me move some boxes into my office.  After this, we are going to see what happens when we take Jake to the dollar theater to see "Cars."

Then we shall come home to dine on fine microwavable cuisine.  Then Jake shall play outside, while I follow behind him reading.  Soon afterwards, Jake shall go to sleep for the night, and I shall find some way to occupy myself.  I can never sleep when Jessica's not home.

Somewhere in all of the above, Jake is supposed to take a nap, as well.

See you soon, Jessica.  --Kris

9/1/06--  The family went on a double date (plus one) to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.  Unfortunately the traffic was so bad that instead of a 45 minute drive, it turned into a 2 hour trip and we only had 30 minutes to see the museum.  After we all got kicked out, we walked by the La Brea Tar Pit (it stinks) and then headed to UCLA for coffee and dessert.  Jaocb had a scrambled egg and milk as a bedtime snack and slept the whole way home.

8/30/06--  To celebrate Jessica's first day of school, Jacob decided to go through her bag and eat some Tylenol.  Kris and Jacob got a ride to the emergency room and hung out for two blood tests.  Jessica came by after class to pick the boys up.  The nurse said that Jacob was the best baby she'd ever taken blood from since he didn't cry (he did cry the first time, but Mommy wasn't there so it doesn't count).  Neither test showed any trace of Tylenol, so Jake must have just put them in his mouth and not actually eaten any.

8/28/06--  After Jessica's doctor appointment, the family took a trip to the DMV (Jacob took a nap) and then headed to the beach.  Jacob woke up just in time for his parents to find the perfect parking place in the shade and all three happily hiked to their favorite spot on the main beach.  Jacob liked seeing the birds and playing in the waves.  The family tired after an hour and retreated to their favorite pizza place for lunch.

8/25/06--  Jacob had his final check up at the burn center today.  The doctor said that everything looks great and that we'll just need to continue with the vitamin E for the next year.  We'll only have to go back if the scar starts to retract as he grows, but she said that it looked like it was pretty soft and that we probably won't have that problem.

8/23/06--  Jacob's lower right canine tooth has come in.

8/19/06--  Jacob can growl like a dinosaur.  We've been reading his now favorite book, "How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight?," and when we get to the dinosaur I always grab his tummy and say "RRRAAAWWWRRR!!!"  Now when he hears the word dinosaur, he grabs his own tummy and growls.

8/18/06--  Today while Jessica went to work, Kris took Jacob to a pet store.  Jacob loved the puppies and kitties and really wanted to take one home.  Afterwards, they played in a fountain.

8/13/06--  Today the family went to the Orange County Zoo at Irvine Park.  It was not a great zoo, but the park offered a pleasant afternoon out.  Jacob saw a few animals, REALLY liked the nature center (dead animals stay still longer and are easier to see), and enjoyed the playground and pony ride.  Most of the day, Jake was heard to say, "See?  See?  See?"

8/12/06--  Today Jacob and his parents picked out a new car.  They are now the proud ownders of a 4 door, red 2006 Hyundai Accent.  Perfect for two car seats...

8/11/06-- A bit of explanation:  in the "Crazy Baby" video, Jacob is putting the pillow in front of his face so that he can't see, and then purposefully running into things.  He is one crazy baby!

8/6/06--  UPDATE:  Jacob can now say the word, "fish."  He's said it a couple of times now so we're sure he said it on purpose.  He's also able to click his tongue.  When Kris goes in to get him in the morning he says, "Uh oh!" and points to where he dropped his pacifier.  He likes to dance to music by stomping his feet.  He now knows the word "wiggle" and can can wiggle his nose, his ears, his toes, and for some odd reason, his hair.  He likes to spin in circles until he falls down.  He still loves books most of all.  His current favorite is "How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight?"  He can point out the mommy, the daddy, the doggy, the kitty, the fish, and usually the dinosaur.  He brings us this book and wants to read it over and over.  Kris took Jacob to get a new pair of shoes since the ones we bought in June are already too small.  They are black suede shoes with velcro closures.

8/3/06--  For the first time in ages, Jessica put Jacob to bed.  Granted, Jake was way past tired, so it was easy compared to most days, but he was very sweet as he drank his milk and snuggled his sleep monkey.  Once he finished, he turned over on his tummy and began snoring.

8/2/06-- Jessica took Jacob to the UCI Arboretum today to run around in the grass.  They were surprised, however, by the inclusion of sprinklers going full blast.  Making lemonade out of lemons, Jessica stripped Jacob down and let him play in the water.  He thought it was interesting, but wanted mommy to play, too.

7/31/06--  The Rhodes family has traveled far and wide today.  We started off this morning headed to Laguna Beach for a doctor's appointment.  Then, it was off to the airport to pick up Chad, Hope, and Ethan.  Then we drove to Santa Ana to the DMV to get our car registered.  Then we went to the Santa Ana Zoo.  Now we're back and very, very tired.

7/28/06-- Today Jessica worked some overtime, so Kris took Jacob around town for the day.  Jake fell asleep on the way to the book store and stayed asleep for an hour while his daddy strolled around the store.  He had Thai food for lunch and was rewarded for his good behavior with a trip to Babies 'R' Us.  Jake picked out a pop corn popper push toy which turns out to be really, really loud.  He liked it so much that he fell into a crying heap when Kris went to pay for it!  Toddlers...!
