6/9/06-- Bright and early, Jessica, Kris, Ethel, and Jacob went to the airport and headed to  Flagstaff, Arizona.  They arrived around noon, got a bite to eat, and checked in to their lodgings.  That evening, Jessica, Ethel, and Jacob went to the Lowell Observatory for Star Fest.  Telescopes were set up to see Saturn and Jupiter.  It was a lovely evening and a good time was had by all (even Kris who was working on a paper).

6/8/06-- A baby sea lion was born at the aquarium, so we went to take a look.  Jake enjoyed the fish (or kitties, as he calls them) and we all had a great time.  Now we're getting ready for our trip to the Grand Canyon...

6/7/06-- Today we went to Tanaka Farms and picked our own strawberries.  We took a tour on the back of a tractor and saw bananas, apricots, plums, peaches, green beans, squash, broccoli, cauliflower, and tons more.  The tractor stopped at every field to give out samples of the fruits and veggies grown there.  Then we stopped off at the strawberry field to pick our own strawberries.  It was lots of fun!  Jacob really enjoyed picking the ripe strawberries (as well as a few green ones).  Later, we all had strawberry shortcake.

6/4/06-- Tonight Jacob figured out how to dip bread into olive oil and eat it.  The suprising part is that he liked it.  The whole philosophy gang and Maroua went out for belated birthday dinners and ate way too much Italian food.  Other fabulous things Jake is doing:  petting the cats, brushing the cats (sort of), getting diapers and bringing them over when its time for a change, throwing dirty diapers in the trash, waving, "hi," and indicating the desire to sleep by bringing "sleep monkey" to Kris.  We have a little ceramic panda bear on a spring that when pushed, wobbles up and down.  Jacob loves this thing and will hit his parents on the head so that they will do the same thing.

6/3/06-- Today was a baby shower for Jake's soon-to-be friend to be named later.  He and his buddies, Allison and Kate, drew on paper and ate many many baby quiches.

5/28/06-- The family had a great day today.  First we all went to Old World German restaurant where Jacob ate his first spaetzle.  We then watched a dachsund race--the Weinerapolis 500.  It was hot and hard to see the race, so we just walked around for a while petting the contestants.  Afterwards, we decided to head for the beach.  We were suprised at how many people were there today!  Usually when we go there are only a few people around, but today the whole beach was packed.  We were lucky to have a parking space!  We first stopped at the Baskin Robbins where Jake and Kris shared a vanilla shake.  Then we went and found a place in the sand.  Jacob played in the sand for a while and then went to go check out the ocean.  He LOVES the waves rushing over his feet and we stayed at the water's edge for a long time.  We headed home to a hot shower and pajamas.

5/15/06-- Jacob and Jessica went to the beach for a little walk today.  Jake kept pointing at the seagulls saying, "See? See?"

5/14/06--  Happy Mother's Day!!!  Jake and Kris planned the perfect day for Jessica.  First order of the day:  SLEEPING IN!  Next was a cheery wake up from a smiley baby, flowers, chocolate, and a card.  Breakfast in bed would have followed, but being tempted by the thoughts of a chicken fried steak for lunch, Jessica chose cereal instead.  We drove to Huntington beach for lunch after Jacob's nap and then headed home, full to the brim.

5/9/06-- Jake and Daddy went to Laguna Beach for breakfast this morning.  They had french toast and all the fixin's and then headed for the beach.  Jake played in the sand for a while and tried to get his daddy to take him swimming.  Later, he went to lunch with his pal, Ethan, and his mommy, Hope, on the way to Ethan's four month doctor's appointment.  Once Jacob arrived home, he played in the dirt for a long time.  Then he went on a walk with Allison and her mommy, Camille.  What a busy day!

5/6/06-- Today in the bath, Jacob figured out the concept of pouring water from one pitcher into the other.  He was fascinated.

5/3/06-- UPDATE:  Jacob has been sleeping through the night for a week now.  He's down to about one breastfeeding per day.  He walks all over the place and tried running after Rami today.  He has 12 teeth which are not quite fully out yet.  He knows how to find his nose, ears, and belly button.  He can clap, wave and say "hi," wave goodbye, put his hands on his head when we say "Oh no!!!"  He now eats almost anything, exceptions being tough or hard foods.  When he wakes up he wants to be taken around the room to look at all of his animals and pictures--he'll say, "See? See?" and point to the monkey, the bird, the pig, the panda, the bunnys, the butterflies, and the Cat in the Hat.  It's the same order each day.  We moved the pig into his crib since he liked it so much, but it threw off the routine so we had to put it back.

5/1/06-- Jake got new shoes today.  He's worn a hole in the toe of his little leather ones, so he now has brown, suede tennis shoes with velcro straps.

4/30/06-- We all loaded up and headed for Los Angeles for the Festival of Books at UCLA.  It was overwhelming, but interesting.  Kris accidentally met author, Harry Turtledove, and we were amazed at all of the illustrators and authors just hanging out.  Jacob ended up with the most books:  Big Red Dragons Don't Take Naps, Zen Shorts, and a Japanese-English first words board book.  We ate at a wonderful little mom and pop Italian place on Wilshire and then headed towards the coast in search of the Dairy Queen we thought that we remembered from two years ago.  Jake slept through most of our wandering, but we DID find the DQ, ate ice cream, and went home.

4/27/06-- Last night was Texas Night at the Rhodes household.  The whole gang was invited over for ribs, baked potatoes, and corn on the cob.  Jake had mac and cheese since his teeth aren't quite ready for gnawing on a rib bone.  He's currently working on molars on both the top and bottom--they're almost all the way out, making the total 12 teeth.

4/23/06-- We took a trolley to Balboa Park for the Earth Day Festival.  It was a very pleasant day and we walked around looking at all kinds of booths and demonstrations.  That evening we ate dinner and headed home on the train.

4/22/06-- We took the train to San Diego in the morning, checked into our hotel, and headed to the Gaslamp District for some lunch.  We then took a trolley to Balboa Park and visited several museums.  That night we met up with friends, ate dinner in the Gaslamp District (at the SAME Irish place, might I add) and strolled around.

4/17/06-- Jacob's head bandage has completely come off today.  All that is left is a little rectangle of redness where the graft was taken.  His finger still has a scab, but he hasn't needed any bandaging in the last two days.

4/16/06--  First, let us congratulate Jacob on sleeping UNTIL 5:51 THIS MORNING!!!  YAY!!!!!!  The rest of the day was good, too.  Jessica and Maroua colored eggs and "hid" them for the boys to find.  Rami caught on quickly and was excited that he could finally touch the eggs his mother had been keeping him away from all morning.  Jacob took a few minutes to get the jist, but was soon picking up eggs (and other random objects) and putting them into his basket.  This was a much nicer egg hunt for all involved.

4/15/06-- Today was the Verano Place Egg Hunt.  Next year we will go to the Huntington Beach egg hunt because this one was pretty lame.  There were about two dozen kids lined up for three dozen eggs so many of the kids didn't get anything (Jacob included).  Luckily a nice Chinese family came by and put an egg into Jacob's empty basket and he hung onto it until he went to sleep that night.  Tomorrow's plan is to have our own egg hunt so that Jacob and Rami will definitely get eggs this time.
