10/02/05-- Kris's mother is visiting us so we decided to do something different. We went to Tanaka Farms and enjoyed the nice weather and the "Pick Your Own Pumpkin" patch. We chose 4 little ones and 3 for making pumpkin bread and baby food. 9/25/05-- Jacob has a favorite song. We have a classical music CD that I put in every once in a while and Jake stares at the CD player and smiles whenever he hears the song " Fuggi, Fuggi, Fuggi da Questo Cielo." He loves to play with his Baby Einstein piano and thinks that guitars are really neat. 9/20/05-- Jacob had his 6 month doctor's appointment this morning. I'm not 100% sure about his stats because I was so panicked over the three shots he had to have (no baby should be subjected to a nurse who has never given shots before!!!). I know that he is 27 inches long, I can remember that he weighs 17 something (I think), and his head is normal sized. The nap in the car on the way home seems to have made everything okay again. 9/19/05-- Jake has really been working on sitting up. From crawling, he can maneuver to a sort of one-armed sideways leaning kind of thing, but then he often falls backward and hits his head. 9/18/05-- Today we celebrated Jacob's 6th Month as a tax write-off ; ) It was his first time to eat solid food--I made him squash becuse I figured it would appease everone who said "start with something sweet" andeveryone who said "don't start wih something sweet." He actually seemed interested in the first two bites, but after that, he wrinkled up his little nose as if to say, "Yuck!" He'll get another serving tomorrow and for the next 3 days. After that, we're thinking apples. 9/17/05-- Jessica and Jacob went to the Farmer's Market today to pick out some of Jake's new foods. He'll soon be dining on butternut squash, apples, and nectarines. Tomorrow is his 6 month birthday so to celebrate, Jake will get his first taste of solid food (not counting that magazine page). 9/14/05-- It is decided! Kris and Jessica now concur that there is, in fact, a second tooth. Just in time to start solid foods on his 6 month birthday Sunday! 9/13/05-- Two tooth, or not two tooth? That is the question... Jessica says the second tooth is out, visible but not touchable. Kris thinks Jessica is crazy, as he can neither see or feel a second tooth. Stay tuned...! 9/10/05-- Jacob is currently making a full transition to his crib. He had been sleeping in a co-sleeper beside Jessica and Kris's bed for night time feeding convenience, but now that he is a little older and sleeps a little (and I mean a little!) longer, he can sleep in his own room. Kris has a whole routine for getting him to sleep: 1.) Play "Jump Up and Try to Eat the Red Raiders" 2.) Lie down with the lights dimmed and listen to "Fight, Raiders, Fight" several times 3.) Get a diaper change and a feeding 4.) Walk, Jiggle, and Rock until baby's little body goes limp. The teething thing gets in the way some nights, but all in all, it's working out pretty well. 9/8/05-- Jake drank from a cup today. Well... sort of. Mostly he grabbed the cup and poured it down his face. 9/4/05-- Today Jake joined his family at the table for lunch. He is not eating yet, of course, so he played with his cup and spoon and Jessica and Kris were able to eat their food with two hands (each, not together like usual!). In other news, Jacob has decided that the whole "inch worm" method of scooting is too demanding. He now just uses his arms to drag his body forward while he launches off with his toes. 9/2/05-- Jacob's first tooth is coming in! It's barely out, but definitely, there. 8/29/05-- Jake has had his first car wreck today. Jessica was at a stop light and was rear-ended. There is only minor damage to the car and everyone was fine, just a little scared. 8/28/05-- Update: Jacob is able to move just about anywhere he wants to. It's not quite crawling yet, but he scoots his way across the livingroom floor like a little inch worm. It's amazing how he can single out the only thing in the room that is not for him (i.e. Kris's tests that he is grading!). He tries to eat everything-- toys, the couch, the cats, himself... Luckily, the cats are fast, but he has given himself a nice looking hickey on his arm. 8/25/05-- Due to some repair work, our apartment was without electricity today, so we decided to go back to the aquarium. Jake had a great time looking at the fish again, but also liked looking at the lorikeets in the aviary. His favorite fish is a puffer fish--probably because they are slow and he can focus in on them. 8/24/05-- Jacob has made some new friends. Jessica has joined a moms group and so Jake met Allison (9 months) and Rami (8 months). He likes to look at the other babies and is really interested in whatever it is they are doing. 8/16/05-- Just as Samson slept through his first haircut, so did Jacob. Today I cut a long lock off of the back and some random wisps off of the sides. The trademark bangs are still untouched. 8/13/05-- Jacob K. Rhodes, Ocean Biologist... today we went to the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach. Jake thinks it's the coolest thing he's ever seen in his entire life (all 5 months of it!) He loved to watch the fish and tried to grab them as they swam by. Unfortunately, we forgot the camera, but we bought a disposable and hoped for the best. We will DEFINITELY go again since fish seem to be more entertaining than elephants or monkeys. 8/11/05-- Jake and Jessica went to the Santa Ana Zoo with some friends. It's a small zoo, but we still managed to spend the entire afternoon looking around. The only animal that held Jacob's interest this time was a white faced Seki monkey.
