2/13/07-- As soon as we posted about Jacob's sleep situation, it suddenly flipped. Jacob now refuses to take a nap in the afternoons, but goes to sleep easily at night. Jessica has been having Jacob stay on the bed for an hour of quiet time and he happily reads books and plays with puzzles, but no sleeping. Tonight, Kris put Jacob to bed, left, and returned in 10 minutes to find him sound asleep. Now Jessica will either have to find a new strategy or just give up on naps alltogether. 2/9/07-- Jessica took Jacob to the doctor today. Jake got a big splinter in his foot that his parents couldn't get out and he cried and cried and cried and wouldn't stand on his foot. After waiting a really long time, the doctor took a look at Jake's foot and determined that there was no splinter in there and that he would walk on his foot once the soreness had ceased. Needless to say, Jessica felt like an idiot, but is glad that Jacob is doing fine. And he weighs 27 pounds. 2/7/07-- It's still taking a really long time to get Jake to bed, but it's at least at a decent hour now. Suspicions are that it will get better with time. Jacob painted a shirt for Ella today. It was really interesting because once he had gotten the gist of the whole thing, he started making blobs and saying "dip dip," which is his word for bird. I guess he made a landscape with birds... who knows!?! 2/6/07-- We're trying a new approach with bedtime. Naptime is perfect: no bottles, no pacifiers, and Jake's very cooperative about going to sleep. Bedtime is far from perfect, but Kris is trying a few new ideas like starting the night night routine as soon as Jessica leaves for work. Last night was night #1 of this and it took 2 1/2 hours for Jacob to fall asleep, but he stayed in bed and was quiet and Kris was able to leave the room a couple of times without Jake freaking out. This morning, Jacob (and his parents!) slept until 9:30!!! It was amazing! 2/3/07-- We still can't find the word list, but Jake can say "hippo" now and is combining words like, "No, Daddy!" and "Night Night Kitty." The family went to the park today and fed the ducks (oh yeah, he can say "duck" and "quack quack" and he says "hop hop" for bunnies) and played on the playground. Jacob really liked the seagulls since they could catch the bread in the air. He learned to play the harmonica today and always gives himself a hearty round of applause after each "song." (Downside: He won't stop playing harmonica.) He's been really interested in his baby pictures lately. I'm not sure if it's because he's been seeing Bridget's baby, Kate, and likes to look at babies, or if he's getting better at recognizing himself and his family. One odd development is that he's been freaking out when we go to people's houses. He's excited to go, happy to knock on the door, but then, as soon as we walk inside, he cries and says, "Bye bye! Bye bye!" and reaches for the door. He hasn't had a babysitter in quite some time, so we're not sure why this has been happening. Jessica took him for a haircut yesterday and for the first time in his life he freaked out and started crying for Mommy. Jessica sat in the chair with him and he was fine, but he just had a haircut in December and had no problems. Kids! 1/30/07-- Jacob's been learning more words... but we lost our list so we can't remember everything he's said lately. Definitely poo poo and pee pee, many Sesame Street characters, and he now combines "apple" and "juice." Last night Kris was trying to get Jacob to sleep and was softly humming him a song. After about five minutes, Jake reached up and touched his finger to Kris's mouth and sweetly said "off." Apparently that was enough of that! Naps have been pretty good lately but we're still working on bedtime. Last night Jake stayed up until 11:30... and then woke up at 6:50AM. Yikes! Next project may be to teach Jacob to tell time so he understands that his parents are TIRED!!! 1/26/07-- Our stroller broke! Kris took Jacob to go buy a second-hand DVD player (to replace ours which broke 2 weeks ago) and the cord which adjusts the seat incline tore off. We have an umbrella stroller which we use most of the time anyway, so this won't be too much of an impact until Ella arrives. Jake's CD player also broke, but we'll probably pick up one for him soon. I guess this is like when one appliance breaks, they all break...! 1/23/07-- We're still working on the bed thing with mostly success. Kris has moved Jacob's bed time back to 9PM instead of 7:30PM and has had fewer problems getting him to sleep. Nap times are mostly fine with a few snags here and there. Jacob has twice let us know that he has pooped, though it's always after the fact instead of before. I guess watching "Elmo's Potty Time" twice a day has helped. Then again, all of Jessica's coworkers now know the song "Accidents Happen." 1/21/07-- Jacob has forsaken his mother. The family went to visit Mark and Bridget and Baby Kate and were introduced to Mark's parents. Jacob, though shy at first, then proceeded to call Mark's mom "mama" and would run after her wherever she went. We are wondering what exactly was in those orange slices that she fed him... 1/19/07-- Jacob had a "toddler moment" today. He and Jessica spent the morning playing games on Sesame Street.com, had a great lunch....and then the freak out happened. Once Jake finished his lunch, he started yelling, "Elmooooooo!" a la "A Streetcar Named Desire." Jessica took him upstairs for nap time and he continued to howl for Elmo. Luckily, this little break down only lasted about 15 minutes. Jake calmed down once Jessica started reading to him in bed. 15 minutes later he was asleep. 1/17/07-- fkd , mj jf, v n 4 Love, Jacob 1/17/07-- After Jessica's appointment this morning, Jake got the chance to go to the beach for a little while. He played at the playground and chased the seagulls. It started to get chilly so they went to lunch and then headed home. 1/14/07-- Here's what's been going on: we're still working on this sleeping in the bed thing with mixed results. At nap time, he's been getting better and only takes about 30 minutes to get to sleep. The downside is that his naps have been later in the afternoon and he sleeps too late to be sleepy at bedtime. Bedtimes are averaging out to be between an hour to three hours wait before he falls asleep. He hasn't really been waking up in the night (the good news) but he has been waking up about an hour earlier than usual every morning (the bad news). When he wakes up, he no longer cries, but he'll walk into the hallway and say, "Mama?" When mama says hello back he comes in talking at 100 miles per hour. He'll snuggle for a little bit and then wants to play. Jake's new girlfriend was born on the 12th. Kate Bullio was born at 9:37PM; she's 8 lbs, 2 oz, 21 inches long. She has a fuzz of blonde hair and is as cute as a baby can be. Mark and Bridget look great (Bridget more than Mark!) and they'll come home in the next couple of days. Their baby homepage is: www.babyhomepages.net/babybullio 1/11/07-- Jacob got a late start to bedtime last night because mommy and daddy were watching a movie with Bridget and Mark (still no baby!) so he went to sleep almost immediately. He woke up at 7:40 this morning so we're back to his usual wake up time. He didn't cry, he just came into his parents' room and said, "Mommy?" He then crawled into bed and cuddled with his parents for a little while before showing off his bed jumping skills and being escorted by his daddy downstairs. 1/10/07-- Jacob slept in his bed until 6:20 this morning! When he woke up, he didn't cry, but he did get out of bed and start rattling the safety gate. When we called out to him he came into our room and got into bed with us. Unfortunately he didn't go back to sleep again, but he did lay in bed and cuddle with us for another 30 minutes or so. Then Kris took him downstairs for breakfast and Elmo's Potty Time (Jacob's first video). For nap time, Jacob was pretty good. It took Jessica about 45 minutes to get him to sleep, but he wasn't mad today, just playful. He woke up about 2 hours later, so it seems like he's adjusting back to his normal schedule. 1/9/07-- Today Jacob and Jessica ran errands with Auntie Bridget. Bridget is about a week overdue of having her own little one, so we were hoping that running around would help get things going. We went to the post office, the craft store, and Chick-fil-A. Jacob ate tons of fruit and he's now decided that the tangerines aren't yucky, they're actually really good. He loves to point out the apples since he can say that word now. We played on the playground and he showed some of his toddler skills when his mommy said, "Let's go in the car" Jacob said, "No." Jessica had to climb into a very small tunnel and drag Jacob out. Luckily, Jake is too small to climb very high, but this bodes a little ominous for trips to Chick-fil-A in the future. Nap time was more difficult today. Jacob kept asking for his daddy and wanted to go to bed in the crib instead of the twin bed. After much fussing and pouting, Jacob (and his Mommy) fell asleep. Kris came home at 5:30 and woke the sleeping pair, but Jacob kept trying to go back to bed. He must have fussed so long that he didn't get a good nap. Hopefully, this sleep routine will become shorter and we can all go back to wonderful 2 hour naps. (He also said "teddy bear" and "book" today.) 1/8/07-- For bedtime Kris put Jacob in his big bed and sat down in the floor beside him. There was much fussing and fidgeting, but he eventually went to sleep. At 3AM Jake woke up and Kris went to calm him down and ended up spending the rest of the night in bed with him. At 7AM he gave Kris the slip and he came in to say hi to his mommy. 1/8/07-- Today Jacob has played outside most of the day. It was really warm today so we went to visit Auntie Bridget and play on the playground. For naptime, Jessica made sure to feed Jacob a ton of food and put him to bed in the twin bed instead of the crib. Jessica was right there beside him to tell him it was night-night 20,000 times and after probably an hour of this, he fell asleep. 1/7/07-- After saying yet another word, "bubble," Jessica went to work and Kris was left with the task of getting Jake to bed. Pre-bedtime, Jacob spent 30 minutes crying and yelling in front of the computer because he wanted to play the Elmo games on Sesamestreet.com... even though that was what WAS on the computer. Kris ended up putting Jake to bed in the crib and moving him to the bed after he was already asleep. At 5AM Jacob woke up screaming, but didn't get out of bed. Kris went to get him and brought him into Jessica. Kris got Jake some milk and Jake spent the rest of the night in bed with his parents. By rest of the night I mean until 7:40 when he woke up happily playing peek-a-boo with the covers.
