Stories 2-25-08: Back to Urgent Care! Yep, we paid a visit to our neighborhood Urgent Care yesterday. (I hope we're earning frequent flier miles!). Avery has yet another ear infection. It's her right ear again that is infected, with some fluid in her left ear. The Urgent Care doctor said we need to follow up with her Pediatrician to discuss the possibility of tubes. I am not a doctor, nor do I ever plan to become one, but to me it almost seems like it's the same damn ear infection that just isn't going away with antibiotics. (The U.C. doc said that they are new ear infections every time). It's just hard to believe that every time we go it's the same story - right one is infected, and fluid in left one. Hmmm . . . . Avery is trying her 4th different antibiotic, so we'll see how this round goes. We're also treating her for a bad diaper rash and a yeast infection . . . . more than likely caused by the antibiotics. 2-13-08: Avery is 11 months old today, and I am happy to report that she seems to be on the mend! We have noticed a considerable difference since she's been on her current antibiotics, compared to the last two rounds. Avery has not been too interested in eating lunch or dinner, however she LOVES kiwi and will eat it whenever it's available! I think some of her meds cause a decreased appetite. We took Avery's 1 year photos on Sunday. I still can't believe she was born nearly a year ago. I'll post a few of the shots we took for a little sneak peek. She was so good - just sat there looking absolutely adorable and let us do our thing for almost an hour!
2-11-08: Well . .. . we're on our 6th doctor's office/urgent care visit and it's been 1 month that Avery has not been feeling well.
She woke up from her afternoon nap today with a 103.8° fever. Steve took her to urgent care . .. . she STILL has an ear infection, but now has a sinus infection, respitory infection & early bronchitis to add to the list.
The meds. they prescribed are no where to be found. We called 15 pharmacies and no one has it. So Steve went back to Urgent Care to get a new prescription . .. and they gave her Zithromax, which was the first antibiotic that she was on and ended up worse after she finished it! So, I just sent him back to Urgent Care again to get something different.
I feel so sorry for Avery. She really has been so good through all of her ailments. I'll be glad when we can all get healthy in this house and can get out and see our friends again!
2/9/08 - Avery met her Great Grandma Ring today. Great Grandma was really impressed with Miss Avery. She said "I've never seen a baby so alert and aware of things at this age. I think she could even be President one day." 2-8-08: DAYS OF DISCOVERY! I'm sure the new pictures have given you an idea of what life has been like at the Maize household! Avery is discovering new things every day. I do not get a minute to sit down during the day AT ALL! She has finally been crawling on all 4's and only has one speed when she does that . . . FAST! I have to keep my eye on her every minute, or she's down the hall pulling herself up on the toilet (eew!), pulling herself up and dumping out one of the many trash cans in the house, chewing on a telephone cord or DVD cord that is near the ground, eating dogfood, splashing in the dog water or even dumping it all over herself, getting herself stuck under the dining room table & chairs, pulling the barstools down on top of herself . . . I'll stop there! Needless to say, she's gotten quite a few bumps & bruises this week. Steve is calling her "Rocky" because she has two bruised eyes from pulling the heavy iron bar stool down on her, a bruised nose from trying to pull one of her toys off the shelf, and a bloody mouth from hitting her mouth on the chair when she was trying to crawl under the table. On top of all the bumps & bruises this week, she's still not feeling 100% from her double ear infection. She's been on a decongestant and antibiotics for 10 days now and is still not completley well. I suspect we'll be at the doctor's office again next week asking "what now?" 1/31/08: Avery has another ear infection, but this time - it's in both ears! She cried like she was in pain and just beside herself yesterday from 9:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., when I called Steve at work crying and asked him to come home and take Avery to the doctor. He took her up the street to our brand new urgent care, and got right in. I knew when the first doctor at a different urgent care prescribed her Zithromycin that it probably wouldn't work, since that's the luck I have every time my doctor puts me on the Z-pak. I knew there was something still wrong with her - you know, that mother's instinct tells quite a bit. I guess it took 4 doctor's visits at 3 different urgent cares and her pediatrician's office to figure it out! Grrr! She's a little (and I mean little) bit better today, but still seems to be in pain. : ( 1/29/08: Here's a rough sketch of Avery's typical day: 7:00 -> 7:30 - wakes up & eats breakfast (cheerios/toast/pancakes, bananas & sippy cup of water) 8:00 - gets dressed and plays with daycare kids as they arrive 9:00 - 5 oz. bottle of formula 9:30 - morning nap 10:45 - wakes up & joins in "circle time" with daycare kids (abc's, c ounting, colors, shapes, singing, etc.) Avery sits and claps her hands and bobs her head right along with us! 11:15 - Lunch (diced meat or grilled cheese/cheese quesadilla, and fruit-usually apples since she'll eat those, and veggies-she doesn't eat them & sippy cup of water. 12:00 - watches her friend Barney on tv & has 5 oz. bottle. 12:30 - daycare kids take a nap, so it's "Mommy & Avery time" (practicing new tricks, reading books, playing with toys, throwing a ball, etc.). 1:30 - afternoon nap 3:30 - wakes up & has a snack (puffs/crackers & sippy cup of water) then plays with the daycare kids & the huge mess of toys they've made! 5:00 - Dinner (usually same type of menu as lunch) & family time! 6:30 - Bath 7:00 - 6 oz. bottle 7:30 -> 8:00 - Bedtime!
1/24/08: Two updates in one day - can you believe it?! I just thought I'd share with you a little story from today. I had just switched a load of laundry, and put out the daycare kids' napmats (probably a total of 2 minutes that I was out of the room)when I noticed that I couldn't see Avery in the playroom anymore. I looked around and found her sitting in a puddle of water, soaking wet, just splashing away like she was in her bathtub! When I picked her up to change her clothes, I noticed her mouth was full of chewed up dog food! How does this child enjoy eating dog food so much? She couldn't have been hungry since she had just eaten 1/2 hot dog, 1/4 of an apple and some veggie crackers not more than 10 minutes prior to this event. 1/24/08 : Steve took Avery into her Pediatrician's office again yesterday. I got a little paranoid when one of my daycare parents called me to tell me her son has RSV, and another one called to say her daughter has Pneumonia! Thankfully, Avery just has a bad cold, and we're doing everything we can to make her comfortable. I'm a bit of a germ-a-phobe, so I've been Cloroxing all the toys off on a daily basis for about the last two weeks when I noticed some runny noses. (eeew!) Avery is still on the move and instead of rolling all over, she's army crawling all over. She managed to crawl/slide out the back door and outside the other night. We sat there watching her to see if she'd actually do it, and she sure did! She is also working really hard on pulling herself up on anything and everything! Her latest tricks are: saying "uh-oh" when she drops her sippy cup from the high chair (which happens quite frequently), and clapping her hands when you do pat-a-cake or say "yaaay!". She has also become attached to a special blanket. She loves a blanket that she has that has a silky/satin backing on it. She has to put it across her face and feel it with her fingers when she naps/sleeps - it's so cute! Avery and I are going back to Wisconsin this summer for 10 days so she can meet all of her extended family. We wish daddy could come with us, but it's one of his busiest times at work and he can not get time off. : ( 1/19/08: We took Avery into her Pediatrician office's "Twilight Care" tonight. She was really crabby yesterday and woke up this morning with 102.1° fever. All of the daycare kids have had runny noses and a cough this week, so we were worried that she got some type of bug from them. The nurse practitioner checked her ears, lungs and throat and said she looked great. She said the type of antibiotic that she was given for her ear infection last Sunday is still in her system for 10 days, even though she's done taking it. She reassured us that a fever is a "good thing" when it's below 104° (even though that sounds horrific to me!). At least this visit was $30.00 less than going to Urgent Care and we know her ears are all clear! 1/13/08: I forgot to write earlier that Avery tried some watered down juice today for the first time and didn't like it at all! I think I mentioned in a previous post that she only wants to eat meat, cheese & crackers/cereal/puffs (I like to call it the "Lunchable Diet"). I thought that since she won't eat veggies or fruits, I'd give her some of the Juicy Juice that has vegetable juice mixed with fruit juice and that would be a great way to sneak in her vitamins. She took a drink, opened her mouth and let it all run out of her mouth and down her shirt, then followed that up with a horrible "bitter beer face"! It gave Steve & I a good belly laugh today. 1/13/08: Today Avery is 10 months old! We just got back from the Pediatric Urgent Care. Little Miss Avery has her first ear infection. She was not a happy camper last night and no one in this house got much sleep. Grandma, Uncle Cory & Aunt Lisa were supposed to spend the night and ended up going home. She was very unhappy again today and ran a fever from yesterday afternoon through today, so we decided I should take her in. She's on antibiotics and a decongestant, so we're keeping our fingers crossed that the meds help her feel better and get some sleep! (Mom and dad are TIRED!) 1-9-08: Avery is really starting to crawl now. She still does the army crawl, but is getting up on all 4's and rocking back and forth, as well as crawling on all 4's. Since she is getting more mobile, she is discovering new things. She had her first taste of dog food yesterday! She must have loved it, because when I yanked the piece out of her mouth that she was totally crunching on, she quickly loaded up her mouth with the handful she had for backup. 1/5/08 - Happy New Year! I guess it's time to update this website. We had a great Christmas this year with Avery. She was very much aware of what was going on. She loved all of the kids at the children's mass that we went to, and enjoyed the wrapping paper, bows and even the toys inside! Just as we expected, Avery made a haul! Steve and I even took back a couple of presents that we had gotten her after we saw what she got from both grandparent's houses. She loves all of her toys, but the crazy thing is - she seems most excited by the $4.99 baby doll we bought her while out Christmas shopping for her gifts! She just squeals with delight when she sees her doll, or any child for that matter. She LOVES babies and kids!!! She waves bye-bye and kisses her dolls and any child that gets close to her. Avery's 6th tooth broke through the other day. She now has 4 on the top and 2 on the bottom. My child is a little carnivore! All she wants to eat is meat! She'll eat some cheese and puffs too, but won't eat vegetables or fruit anymore - we even try to sneak bites into her mouth and she just spits them out. The doctor told us to just keep offering her a variety of foods and eventually she'll decide she likes them again.
12/22/07: WE HAVE ANOTHER TOOTH! Her top front left tooth is now in, which makes 5 pearly whites! Stats from Dr. appt. - Avery is 29 inches long, weighs 22.4 pounds and is in the 90th percentile for height, weight, and head circumfrence. She got an anemia test which came back negative, and a flu shot yesterday. 12/20/07: THREE new developments!!! 1) Avery has FINALLY attempted to crawl! We have to put treats on the carpet to get her to scoot forward. She kind of does the "army crawl" thing. She doesn't like it one bit, and usually goes back to rolling as soon as she gets her treat. 2) Another tooth has finally popped through, which makes 4 choppers for our little sunshine. She now has her upper, front right tooth, and has two more which should be popping through very soon. 3) Grandpa Ring taught Avery how to wave "bye-bye" on Sunday. Daddy is taking Avery to her 9 month check up tomorrow, so I'll update after we get the stats. 12/13/07 - Avery is 9 months old today! Her upper teeth still haven't broken through. : ( She's definitely got her appetite back because she wants to eat all day long! She's eating anything and everything now. Whatever we put in our mouths, she thinks she needs to try. Avery goes in for her 9 month well baby check-up next Friday, so I'll update again after that. Merry Christmas!! 12/5/07: Avery is so close to cutting two more teeth. Her gums on the upper right are just red and inflamed, and you can even feel where her teeth are, but they are just taking their sweet time to cut through. She's been a bit on the grouchy side, and hasn't been eating or drinking as much as usual. It seems that all she wants to eat is Cheerios or puffs. It must feel good on her gums to crunch things. The doctors always say they'll eat when they're hungry . . . so I guess we'll just be patient. Our little sunshine is still not crawling, nor is she even trying to crawl! However, she does have some new tricks. She likes to shake her head "no" when you try to feed her baby food (she only wants Cheerios), and she also buzzes her lips (I think people call it "blowing raspberries"?). Maybe she'll be a trumpet player like her mommy and grandma??!! Avery is also infatuated with The Wiggles and the "Wheels on the Bus" song. She has been going through a little "crabby hour" each night, and since it's too early to put her to bed, The Wiggles Dance Party is our only saving grace! I'm not so sure about those guys . . . .
11/27/07: On Sunday I took Avery to the Chandler mall to see Santa. She was a perfect child - sat right on his lap and just smiled for her picture. I'm kind of disappointed because the Santa was kind of creepy. When I went to lift Avery off his knee he said "Does she have 6 toes?" I said, "WHAT?" He repeated himself, then I responded "No - just 5 toes!" He kind of sat there in deep thought for a moment, and held onto her then said "I was just testing you." WEIRD-O!!!! So - to all my friends out there looking to take their kids to see Santa - steer clear of the Chandler Fashion Center Santa!!! Plus - the background in the pictures isn't that nice! Take a peek on the photos page. : ( 11/21/07: HAPPY BABY SYNDROME? I think my child has "Happy Baby Syndrome". Many of my friends who have kids told me how they were always stopped in the mall or grocery store when they'd go out with their babies, and how annoying it got for them. Well friends, I finally understand your frustration!!! Don't get me wrong, I am so thankful and blessed to have such a happy, well behaved child, but sometimes it backfires on me. Tonight, for example . . . . Steve is home in bed with 101.0° fever & flu bug, so I ran to the grocery store to get him some soup. I took Avery with me, because I didn't want his germy hands touching her while I was gone. Being the night before Thanksgiving, the grocery store was the last place I wanted to be - it was pure chaos! I went there for two things - soup and clear soda . . . . and it took me an hour! The problem is, Avery smiles and "talks" to anyone who will look at her in the store, causing people to stop and want to talk to and touch (eww!) her. In the beginning, I loved it. Now . . . I'm singing a different tune! They all say "ohh, she looks so happy", and "what a cute baby", then they procede to tell me their life story about all of their children and the trial and tribulations they had with each of them. I now just smile, nod my head and say "yes, she is very happy, and I am so lucky".
