2/10/2004 - Pop and Grandmother Linda have come to visit, and they are loving cuddling with Ella. We are managing to get a few games of cards and dominos in in between long stretches of staring at the baby.
Everyone send good feeding thoughts our way. We had our two-week doctor appointment yesterday, and Ella has not gained enough weight. Today we are letting her breast-feed whenever she pleases, which seems to be about every hour and a half. It is a miracle I have a spare second to update this web site, but she is FINALLY sleeping. We're sure we'll get over this hump, but it has her mommy and daddy a little stressed out.
I still haven't posted Ella's birth story because I haven't written it yet! Someday . . . Like maybe when she heads off to school for the first time!
I've posted a couple of new pictures of Ella for your viewing pleasure. She is still as cute as a bug.
2/7/2004 - Announcing Ella Aubrey Williams Thompson!
We welcome into the world little Ella. Or, as we like to call her:
Ella Squeak (because she does) Ellabean Ella Fair (her proud papa's name for her) Ella Cake (because she is so cute we want to eat her up) and her Native American name, Ella, She Who Sucks Like Barracuda (given to her by a lactation consultant at the hospital. I am dealing with very sore nipples and feeding every two hours, but we are glad she is such a good eater.)
Thank you for all the good wishes. I will post her birth story in the next few days. I am able to type and breast-feed at the same time, so hopefully we won't make you wait too long. The short version is, Ella is the best thing we have ever done, and we are absolutely in love with her.
1/21/2004 - Three more days until our due date! People are beginning to suggest ways to induce labor, recommending everything from spicy food and long walks to hand and feet massages. I think this baby will just show up when it is ready, regardless of how many times I climb the hills in our neighborhood. If it is a true Thompson, it will make its appearance about 10 minutes early. :-)
Other pregnancy news this week: we completed a breast-feeding class at the hospital, which was very informative. I feel much less intimidated and more prepared. I also learned of many resources for help should I have any questions or problems; the lactation consultants at Adventist are incredibly supportive.
Well, I'm off to scrub the bathroom. Hmm . . . am I nesting? Maybe it's a sign! :-)
1/9/2004 - Another doctor's appointment today. Dr. Susie gave us the good news that my Group B Strep test came back negative. A lot of women have this bacteria without knowing it, and it doesn't affect them at all. But it can be passed to a baby during delivery, which can sometimes cause blood infection, meningitis, and other scary diseases. If a woman tests positive for the bacteria at the end of her pregnancy, she will be treated with anitbiotics via an IV during labor. That wouldn't have been a big deal, but I would rather labor without being hooked up to any sort of machines or IVs, so the negative result was a relief.
I'm just 1 cm dialated and still 50% effaced (same as at my check up two weeks ago). The baby seems pretty content to call my body home for the time being!
As we come closer to the actual labor and delivery part of this whole experience, and since neither Spencer nor I have ever attended or experienced a birth before, I am more and more glad we have hired a doula to help us with the birth. What is a doula? Check out our doula's web site here: http://www.transitionsbirth.net/
1/2/2004 - Good doctor's appointment today! The baby's heart beat was good (beats per minute in the 140's), and I've gained 28 pounds so far.
The best news is that I am DONE with modified bed rest since this weekend I'll be at 37 weeks and considered full-term. I can go into the office four hours each day, and I can go float around in the swimming pool! I'm getting so uncomfortable that I'll be really glad to feel weightless if only for a little while.
Next appointment is Jan. 9 - let's hope I make it! The doctor is still predicting that the baby will be early.
