Stories April 2, 2008 Well, today has been pretty uneventful! We only got up twice in the night and I slept VERY soundly in between feedings...compared to waking up every half hour to check Caden's breathing like I'd been doing. So, I'm thinking he can start sleeping in his crib at night pretty soon! We walked Scrappy together for the first time, not that Mr. Sleepyhead will remember it! The weather is sunny and not too cold, so I think we'll try to spend some time outside later this afternoon. :) April 1, 2008 We went to the Dr. for the first time today and everything checked out just great! Caden is back up to his birth weight, which the Dr. said may not usually happen for another week or so. I guess he is eating plenty! We were up last night three times, but they were all pretty uneventful, which is a good thing! March 31, 2008 Another great night! The little guy only had me up once and, after eating and getting changed, went right back to sleep! Daddy goes back to work tonight, so we'll be on our own. It's good that we've been practicing making it through the night together! Caden has been slowly starting to stay awake for longer periods of time...just recently for about an hour. We've found that he does enjoy the occasional binky...but only for a few minutes to get to sleep. That's good news for us since we really wanted to keep him away from one. Today we're going to the grocery store and that will be our first outing together as a family. Wish us luck! I'll keep posting as often as possible...happy one week birthday! Oh...here's a re-post of the video that Alma made. It is ADORABLE of our shower and Cadens first photos. Check it out here. March 30, 2008 What a great little baby we have! (knock on wood again!) We went to bed kind of late last night and I only had to get up once overnight until we got up around 6:30 this morning. While he's a little fussy and eats more frequently in the evenings, we think he's just fueling up for a peaceful night! We also gave Caden his first bath today after his "cord" fell off. He slept through the first part of it until mommy accidentally splashed him in the face. Check out the Pictures page to see how it went! He looked SO cute in his little hooded towel...and was so comfortable he even peed on Daddy! The funny part is that he had just done that about an hour beforehand too! March 29, 2008 What a great night we just had! (Knock on wood!) Caden only got up twice, three hours apart, to eat. After that was finished and I put on a clean diaper, he went right back to sleep. Keep your fingers crossed for us that our good fortune continues! Scrappy came home last night and is doing very well with the baby. He has sniffed and even licked Caden and seems to like him quite a bit! As soon as the little guy wakes up I'll post another round of photos. March 28, 2008 Today has been our first full day at home and it has gone really well. Thank goodness Daddy is at home to help out and let Mommy nap every once and awhile! We enjoyed the crisp weather today and grilled burgers. Caden slept the whole time in his sling on Mommy's lap. It was the first step in getting him ready for our first camping trip!! March 27, 2008 Both Caden and mommy are cleared to go home today! All of his wires and tubes have been removed and his breathing has been normal for over 24 hours. While we'll miss having all of the extra help (and mommy will miss the adjustable bed!) we are anxious to get home and get settled in. Again, thanks so much for everyone who called, visited, and signed the guestbook. We are very thankful to have so much support! Wish us luck...and I'll try to post new pictures and stories when I can! March 26, 2008 We got a new roommate today! We are SO glad that little Caden was released from the nursery this morning and, barring any complications, will be able to stay with us from here on out! He still has the IV port on his head that they put in last night, but that should come out soon as well. We've had a busy day getting to know each other and enjoying all of our visitors. We think he looks so different than he did two days ago, but are cherishing every second of his little face! Check out this website for the results of his very first professional photo shoot and see for yourself! March 25, 2008 Well today was full of mixed news. While I got unhooked from all of my machinery and was able to get out and walk around, Caden's condition didn't change too much. We were encouraged that all of the tests came back normally and that this condition is common among babies delivered via c-section. He's had some moments of regular respiratory rates, but they are sporatic. The great news is that we both got to hold him (twice!) today and also change his diaper. We never thought we'd be so happy to do that! :) We're keeping our fingers crossed that when the 48 hour blood cultures come back tomorrow morning that the Dr. will let him come and stay with us until we can leave on Friday. March 24, 2008 After dialating to 4 cm throughout the wee hours of the morning, the baby's heart rate dropped at 3 a.m. The nurse administered medication to stop the contractions, stopped the Pitocin, and did an amnio infusion. While his heart rate did stabilize after all of that, it dropped again shortly after restarting the Pitocin. The Dr. decided that there was no way he could tolerate any further labor, so we agreed to a cesarean section at about 6:30 a.m. Then, at 7:30 we heard his very first, very loud cries! It was music to our ears! After each of us getting to hold him for a few minutes, he was wisked off to the nursery for evaluation. Unfortunately, his respiratory rate was too fast and he had to stay there for observation. As we anxiously awaited his "release" the Dr. decided to do blood work, x-rays, and start and IV and antibiotics. While all of those turned out normally, he was still breathing much too fast. So, we spent the day visiting the nursery when we could. March 23, 2008 The big day at last! After having brunch with my mom, dad, and Collin, I went home and was cleaning out the car. I thought my water broke a little bit around noon so I called the hospital. They had me come in to check it out...and I was admitted around 2 p.m. with no contractions. We held off for a few hours, but finally started Pitocin to get the labor going...and go it did! About four hours later I got the epidural (wow!) and was able to get to sleep around 11:30 p.m. March 18, 2008 Mommy went to the Dr. today and she didn't find any signs that he is ready to come out just yet. We will wait until the 25th before we decide to set a date to help him change his mind! When I called Daddy after the appointment, he had been anticipating me telling him to meet me at the hospital, based on all of the minor contractions I've been having over the past days. I guess they have not been as effective as we thought, though! We sure are ready to meet the little guy, so keep your fingers crossed for us!!! March 11, 2008 Mommy went to the Dr. today and she couldn't tell if he was "head down" or not, so we did an ultrasound. Hi is head down, so that lump I aIways have in the top of my tummy must be his rear. I was relieved to hear that, after the Dr. had predicted that he is already "well over 8 lbs", that the machine predicts he is about 7lbs 10oz with 2 weeks to go. That's still pretty big to me! We got some pictures and know that he is FOR SURE a boy and also got this 3D picture of his face. We can only see the right side of him, but he has chubby cheeks and a cute little wrinkled forehead. He doesn't seem to look so much like daddy anymore, but we'll just have to wait and see! Mommy is getting pretty uncomfortable and hopes he decides to join us soon!! *I'll get the 3D photo posted a.s.a.p. March 2, 2008 It's been awhile since I've written, but that's because not too much has happened...thankfully! The Dr. says everything is fine and she expects the baby to arrive close to the 24th. With all of the snow days we have to make up at work, I sure hope he comes on time otherwise mommy will be back in the classroom after spring break! :( We're just working on getting all of the clothes and bedding washed and bags packed for the big day! January 15, 2008 We went to the hospital today to visit the Labor and Delivery ward. We saw where we'll get to meet our little bundle of joy for the first time! Daddy is impressed with the huge room, fold out bed, and flatscreen TV while Mommy was a little intimidated by seeing the hospital bed she'll spend so much time in. They do have free Wifi though, so as soon as the little guy arrives we'll be able to upload pictures to our website to share with everyone who can't visit in person! Mommy had a dream that night that the nurses wouldn't let her leave the hospital after the visit because she was "close enough" to stay until the birth. She woke up freaking out about how much there is still left to do to prepare for his arrival! January 5, 2008 Everything has been going very smoothly and mommy is feeling lots of kicks all day long! She about had a heart attack, though, when all of our family and friends threw us a surprise baby shower today! There were so many people there and we played games, ate great food, and enjoyed an adorable cake. We received so many generous gifts, we can hardly wait to set them all up in his room! The most memorable event of the night, however, was when Uncle Zachary fell in the garage and knocked himself out on the garage floor. He wouldn't wake up so we called 911 and he didn't come to until they got him to the hospital. Thankfully he was OK, but had a heck of a headache for the next week or so. He sure scared us! November 6, 2007 Today mommy and daddy went to the Dr. for the second ultrasound. We got to hear the heartbeat, see LOTS of pictures, and find out IT'S A BOY! Although we had previously felt, for some reason, that we were having a girl we are SO excited to have another boy in the house...even if it means mommy will be outnumbered 4 to one (counting Scrappy.)
August 13, 2007 At her 8 week appointment, the Dr. did an ultrasound and mommy got to see and hear her little baby for the first time! The heartbeat was 170 beats per minute and it's 1.8 centimeters long. We can already see little arms and legs! The top picture is 3D and the bottom one is 2D.
July 25, 2007 It's official! Mommy went to the Dr. today and they confirmed it. They gave her a due date of March 24, 2008. July 22, 2007 The morning of Uncle Jacob's birthday, mommy took a pregnancy test (actually she took two, just to be sure) and they were positive! We told all of our family first and they were so shocked and excited for us! We also told all of our friends whom we spent a beautiful summer day golfing with at Sun Valley.
