10 Biblical Principles of Education

God's Word provides Christians with key principles so that they know how God expects them to raise or educate their children.

The education of children and youth:

1.     Is the primary responsibility of parents
(Deuteronomy 6:4-49; 11:18-21; Psalms 78:1-7; Psalm 127:3; Proverbs 22:6;
Malachi 2:13-16; Ephesians 6:4)

2.       Is a 24 hour-a-day, 7 days-per-week process that continues from birth till maturity
(Deuteronomy 6:7; 11:19; Proverbs 22:6)

3.       Must have as its primary goals the salvation of and discipleship of the next generation
(Psalms 78:6-7; Matthew 28:19-20)

4.       Must be based on God's Word as absolute truth
(Matthew 24:35; Psalms 119)

5.       Must hold Christ as preeminent in all of life
(Colossians 2:3, 6-10)

6.       Must not hinder the spiritual and moral development of the next generation
(Matthew 18:6; 19:13-14; Mark 10:13-16; Luke 18:15-17)

7 .          If and when delegated by parents, must be done with utmost care to ensure that all teachers follow these principles
(Exodus 18:21; I Samuel 1:27-28; 3:1-10)

8 .          Results in the formation of a belief system or worldview that will be patterned after the belief systems or worldviews of the person's teachers
(Luke 6:40)

9 .          Must lead to true wisdom and understanding by connecting all knowledge to a biblical worldview framework
(Romans 1:20; Psalm 19:1; Proverbs 4:5-7; 3:19; 9:10; Psalms 104:24; 136:5; Jeremiah 10:12; Romans 11:33; Luke 11:52; Colossians 2:3; 1 Corinthians 8:1; 13:8; Romans 1:28

10.     Must have a view of the future that includes the eternal perspective
(Colossians 3:1-2; Matthew 6:1-10-20; 2 Timothy 4:6-8; Acts 20:24; Hebrews 11:13; Colossians 3:23-24)

"Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing." ( 1 Thessalonians 5:11)

I want to be the woman who's husband trusts her, who does him good and not harm all the days of her life, who works with willing hands, who rises before everyone else to take care of needs like clothing and food, a woman who dresses herself with strength physically and spiritually, one who works until the work is done, the one who keeps things steady, who helps the needy, who makes herself appealing for her husband, one who is proud of her husband and lets people know it, who has much dignity, one who overflows with wisdom and has a kind tongue, one who is not lazy, a woman who's children call her blessed and her husband praises her, one who remembers that charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised!(Proverbs 31:10-31)

11/07/08:  A few more Sydney Stories...Jared & I were working with Sydney on her counting and numbers, and we asked her to count to 10 and she blurts out "Uno, Dos, Tres" and we about fell over!  They are teaching them to count in english AND Spanish at preschool!

Jared took Sydney to Fazolis last night for dinner for her favorite dinner of "White Noodles" (aka Fettucine Alfredo).  There was a men's basketball team there also eating dinner.  When it was time to eat, Sydney bowed her head to say her prayers (which she did at the top of her lungs according to Jared) and then she went from table to table insisting that the basketball players say their prayers also!  My girl...always entertainment when I need it!

11/04/08:  Election Day!  I went and voted and then Sydney wore my "I Voted" sticker around saying "I voted!"  And tonight she came up to me and said "Mommy, we need to say the Pledge of Allegiance".  Talk about catching Mommy off guard!  It is amazing what she is learning in preschool...everyday she says something that just blows us away!

11/01/08:  39-33 Baby!!  Wrech 'Em Tech!  Get your guns up!!  What a game!!  Texas Tech (#6 team, undefeated) vs. UT (#1 team, undefeated)...Who's #1 now?!?!  Sydney loved watching the game!  She was marching around hollering "Get your guns up!" and "I'm a Red Raider like Mommy!"  She makes me so proud!  She loves the horse (Soapsuds) but she thinks Raider Red is Elmo...don't ask me why!  She stayed up through the entire game, cheering right along with me.  She was so wound up!  I didn't think I was going to be able to get her to bed when it was over!  What a night!  I am so proud to be a Red Raider! Photobucket

10/22/08:  Sydney had her 3 year well-check today with Dr. Nabulsi.  She weighed in at 38 pounds (95th percentile) and was 40.5 inches tall (off the charts for a 3 year old!)  Dr. Nabulsi said she is doing great-her BMI was in the 50th percentile so she is neither under nor overweight.  He also said she was VERY smart and advanced for her age, which I always knew but it is nice to have a pediatrician confirm it, since I know I am biased!  :)  I had consulted the dr about Sydney possible having ADHD due to her issues at daycare, and after an envaluation he said she definitely does not have ADHD.  He said she has above average intelligence and that she is probably bored and not being stimulated enough.  He also said that she might have a harder time adjusting to new situations than other children.  He went through the developmental checklist and there was only 1 thing Sydney couldn't do on it-well, we don't know if she can do it or not and of course she didn't want to show us!  It was stand on one leg and hop up and down.  I never thought to teach her to do that!  He checked out her ears and said they were fine (since both tubes have fallen out now) and he checked her belly button and said it was such a small hernia he didn't want to worry about it just yet.  I agree-no need for surgery unless it is necesssary.  He also checked her legs and feet since she walks on her tip toes sometimes and said it was not a physical problem, and to help correct it to put her in high-top shoes.  As much as she loves her Disney Princess glitter shoes, she will have to wear the ones we buy for her!  She can still wear her Princess shoes here and there, but during the week when she is at school she will wear the high top shoes that will force her to put her heel on the ground.  I think it is just b/c she is in dance and they tell her to get up on her toes so she does it all the time now!  My little ballerina!

I will try to get the pictures updated and go back and update the stories.  I only have 2 more classes (this Sat & next Sat) and then I have a break before I sit for my PHR exam in December.

07/14/08:  I am finally unloading my pictures from the camera...bear with me as there are over 1300 pictures to go through and put some on the website!  But I promise to update pictures this week!

WHEN YOU THOUGHT I WASN'T LOOKING

A message every adult should read because children
are watching you and doing as you do, not as you say.

When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you hang my
first painting on the refrigerator, and I immediately
wanted to paint another one.

When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you feed a
stray cat, and I learned that it was good to be kind
to animals.

When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you make my
favorite cake for me, and I learned that the little
things can be the special things in life.

When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you make a
meal and take it to a friend who was sick, and I
learned that we all have to help take care of each
other.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you give of
your time and money to help people who had nothing,
and I learned that those who have something should
give to those who don't.

When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you take care
of our house and everyone in it, and I learned we have
to take care of what we are given.

When you thought I wasn't looking I saw how you
handled your responsibilities, even when you didn't
feel good, and I learned that I would have to be
responsible when I grow up.

When you thought I wasn't looking I saw tears come
from your eyes, and I learned that sometimes things
hurt, but it's all right to cry.

When you thought I wasn't looking I saw that you
cared, and I wanted to be everything that I could be

When you thought I wasn't looking I learned most of
life's lessons that I need to know to be a good and
productive person when I grow up.

When you thought I wasn't looking I looked at you and
wanted to say,'Thanks for all the things I saw when
you thought I wasn't looking.'

06/08/08:  What a fun weekend!  Jared & I took Sydney to Abilene this weekend.  We left Saturday morning and drove over.  We went to Grandma's house-she just had surgery on Wednesday and was home from the hospital.  Sydney got to spend some time with Grandma and Aunt Cara.  This was her first time to go to Grandma's house and she had a blast!  We left and went to the Abilene Zoo.  Sydney has been so excited to go, talking about it all week!  We got to see zebras, giraffes, monkeys, lions, and several other animals.  She got to feed the animals "crackers"!  I have some great pictures of her & Daddy!  The giraffes have a bridge that go across their area that allows you to stand above them and feed them.  They kept sticking their LONG tongues out and scooping the crackers from Sydney, which she though was great!  They also have a lake that has millions of fish in it-when you throw food in they come up to the surface to eat-it was chaos!  Sydney would have fed them all day if we let her!  It wasn't too hot but very windy, and after we walked around the zoo we could tell Syd was geting tired.  So we left, and grabbed some food to take to Grandma's house.  Poor Sydney fell asleep on the way to Grandma's!

We went to check into the hotel and they didn't have the room we reserved, so we ended up calling around and finding another room.  We booked a suite with 2 queen beds, and an indoor pool & jacuzzi.  We took Syd and checked into the hotel and then went down to the pool.  Now that her tubes are gone Sydney is loving the water!  She didn't want to get out of the pool!  We lured her out with the fresh baked cookies the hotel had just made for us.  We changed back into our clothes and then went to Prime Time to meet Aunt Cara.  Prime Time is a fun new place-it has a bowling alley, putt putt mini golf, go carts, and an indoor arcade.  We ate pizza, Syd & Daddy bowled, and then we hit the arcade.  Sydney had so much fun!  She won enough tickets to get a pink whistle, 2 heart bracelets, 2 bouncy balls, and a crazy wiggly ball.  We went back to the hotel and went to bed-we were worn out from the busy day!

We got up this morning and went downstairs to eat breakfast, then packed up the car and stopped by to say Goodbye to Grandma and Aunt Cara.  We had a great wekend!  I can't wait for our next weekend trip!  We will probably go to Lubbock to the Museum and maybe some shopping.

05/26/08:  The dance recital is over (5/17)...it was so cute!  Sydney did such a good job-she is a born performer!  Mommy, Daddy, Auntie Shea, Eric, Grandpa, Grams, Aunt Cara, Grandma, Nanny & Papa came to see her, and Leah, Hudson, Asher & Tim were there to see Annabelle so they saw Sydney too, as well as Darlise (a friend).  Daddy, Grandpa, Hudson & Darlise brought Sydney flowers for her dance-they were so pretty!  We started gymnastics this past Monday.  Sydney seems to love it!  (once she got over the initial fear of being someplace new).  She wasn't too sure about having to take turns and wait in line for the trampoline-she wanted to do everything right now!  Gymnastics is at 4:30 so Daddy is picking her up from daycare and taking her and Mommy is meeting them there.  I think Daddy is enjoying getting to do something with Sydney!

Sydney's other tube fell out last Tuesday!  No more tubes!  We took advantage of this by going to Eric's house on Sunday and going swimming.  Sydney did very good-she was a little afraid of the water at first, but by the end of the day she was jumping in to Mommy and walking the steps around the edge of the pool.  She did fall in on accident once...Mommy had to fish her out of the pool!  But it didn't stop her from getting back in!  She looked so cute in her little fish bathing suit with matching fish sunglasses (from Gymboree).  I wish I had my camera to take pictures!  It is so nice to be able to get back into the pool...just in time for summer!  We are going back to Eric's house today for a bar-b-que and some more swimming.  Sydney really loves going over there-it is all she talked about last night!  I might call the COM and see about getting her started in swim lessons again.  We only have gymnastics lined up for the summer and Sydney is so active I don't know if that will be enough for her!

Other than that, we are just busy busy!  I am moving my office downtown this week.  I have been working on the Moving Committee for weeks now and I am glad to finally be moving.  And glad to be about 15 miles closer to Sydney's daycare!  It won't be so far for me to drive in the morning or afternoon to go pick her up.  My payroll assistant also had a baby the day of Sydney's dance recital, so I am a little short-handed at work right now.  Sydney keeps telling me she is going to work with Mommy...I might take her up on her offer!  :)

I posted some new pictures.  2 of them are from dinner with Auntie Shea & Eric the other night-we went to Cheddar's and had "chicken and french fries" (Syd's favorite meal).  And then Eric decided he & Syd needed the Cookie Monster dessert...you can see how much she enjoyed that!  She even had whipped cream on her nose and chocolate by her eye!  Auntie Shea took pictures with her cell phone and sent them to me.

Sydney is growing up so fast!  She is wearing a 5T shirt and 4T shorts now, and a size 10 shoe!  She is closing in on 40 pounds (if she isn't already there) and there is no telling how tall she is...the size of a 4 yr old at least!  People always ask how old she is and are shocked when we tell them she is 2...yes, I know she is tall, yes, her Daddy is tall too, yes, we have tall people on both sides of our family...I get the same questions over and over.  I am just going to start telling people she is 4 so we can avoid the questions!  :)  She is talking up a storm, and repeating EVERYTHING we say!  Jared & I get such a kick out of the conversations she has with us...she is such a joy to be around!  I love listening to her tell me about her day at school or what she wants to do.  She just talks and talks...most of it we understand and sometimes we have to figure it out.  And yes, she does talk back.  She told her Daddy "No, no Daddy, I told you, do you  hear me?" the other night...at least I know she is listening to what I say to her!

She is still as blonde-haired and blue-eyed as ever...I guess it isn't changing anytime soon!  I really thought  would have a brown-haired, brown-eyed baby, but she proved me wrong!  As we go into summer I can see her hair getting lighter already.  I wonder if it will stay blonde forever?

I had a great Mother's Day.  Daddy & Sydney bought me a new lens for my camera!  It is a Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 with a petal lens hood.  I LOVE it!  Daddy & Sydney made Mommy breakfast burritos and let Mommy sleep in...is was a wonderful day!  And then a week later it was Mommy & Daddy's 5 yr wedding anniversary...can you believe it has been 5 years?!?!  :)  Mommy bought Daddy a Flowmaster Dual Exhaust system for his Tahoe, and Daddy sent Mommy flowers at work (they were so beautiful!) and bought me diamond earrings!  They are so pretty!  Sydney keeps telling me how pretty they are and asking to wear them...she is such a girly girl sometimes!  Next is Father's Day...I wonder what Syd is going to get Daddy?  :)

05/11/08:  Quick updates-We had dance rehersal yesterday and the BIG recital is next Saturday, May 17th.  Sydney did so good yesterday-we are so proud of her!  She is definitely a born performer!  We have been so busy-dance Tues, church Wed, dance Thurs, and usually a playdate on Fri.  Then Sat & Sun we spend time with Daddy.  Sometimes on Mon we have my company softball games to go to also.  A bird made a nest on our back porch...in the hollowed out spot of the Elmo pinata!  It is pretty funny-we kept saying we were going to throw that pinanta away (it is from Syd's b-day party last year) and now a bird has built a nest & laid eggs in it.  The eggs hatched this week so now we hear the little chirps of the baby birds!  We see the Mommy bird swoop in with a worm in her mouth and go into the nest to feed her babies.  It is really cool!

Church class ended last week and dance ends on the 20th (recital on the 17th and year-end party on the 20th) so we are winding down and getting ready for the summer!  I can't wait until things slow down a little.  Hopefully we will get to go to the park and the pool and just do some fun stuff this summer.  Dance & church start up again in August, and she is also doing gymnastics in the fall.

My little Superbaby!!

Sydney's daycare had a party for Christmas and they all sang Jingle Bells for the parents...well, they tried to anyway!

04/20/08:  I am updating pictures and video.  The videos go all the way back to Christmas, but I wanted everybody to see them!
