9/28/06 18 month old check up. I'm getting to be a pro at this! No shots this time, so I was very nice to the doctor. I'm now 33 inches and 25 pounds. That puts me just below the 50th percentile in weight and above the 50th percentile in height. Perfectly normal. The doctor gave Mommy all kinds of things to watch out for - make sure to have poison control posted by the phone, latches on cabinets, toilet seats down - as if I would do any of that stuff!! I'm finally starting to say some words - bye-bye, pat-pat, and Ella (according to Ms. Suzanne). Mommy wants to start potty training, but both Grandma and the doctor say that she doesn't need to worry about it yet. I've still got lots of diapers to go through!!
9/16/06 Boy I'm slowing down on writing these updates. Must be because I've mastered everything already! Well, maybe not everything. I have fun at Ms. Suzanne's every day. I love to follow and copy the "big" kids. Now that Ella is mobile she chases after me all day. She likes to use me to pull up on and hang on to - which kind of upsets me and I don't know what to do. I know she's just trying to give me a big hug, but I wish she would play hard to get!! I love playing on my swingset in the back yard. Every afternoon when Mommy and I come home from school, I go outside to let Sophie go potty. While she's doing that I climb up my slide and slide down on my belly. Every now and then I'll turn around and slide down sitting up. Then I climb up the ladder (with Mommy nervously behind me to grab me if I miss a step!). Then, my time in my airplane swing. I love being pushed (not too high!) and love it if you swing next to me.
I had my first time throwing up this weekend. Not a pleasant thing, I know, but another first to document. I guess I just played too much that evening with all the neighbors in the cul-de-sac. I woke up about 9:30 crying 'cuz my tummy hurt. When Mommy came to get me I was gagging a bit and she took me out of the crib in time for it to go all down her leg. After getting cleaned up I went right back to sleep and haven't gotten sick again. Just a little upset tummy I guess. Anyway, back to school tomorrow. I'm going to my Great-Aunt Sue's next week and going on the boat, and seeing my godfather, Terry. Then I'll have more pictures to post!!
8/22/06 Well, Mommy's been back at school for about 3 weeks now (two with kids) and I'm loving my time with Miss Susanne and all the kids. When Mommy comes in the afternoon I give her a hug and then go back to playing or to Mr. Earl's lap. It's almost like, "Mommy who?" (she tries not to take offense) Anyway, I love following the kids around and trying to imitate what they are doing - fish games, ballet (much to Daddy's dismay). I really like trying to be like them. I'm still loving my swing set. I can now climb up the slide to the top all by myself and slide back down. Sophie is having lots of fun with how fast I am now and she USUALLY does a good job of not running into me - although that wasn't the case this afternoon. Oh well, such is a day in my life. I'm down to one nap during the week and sometimes two on the weekends. I'm eating well, and almost talking. At the pool with Auntie Sara last weekend it really sounded like I was saying, "Up there!" when I heard an airplane fly overhead. I'm getting close!
7-22-06 Summer vacation is great! I just got back from a week at the beach in Nags Head, NC with Grandma and Grandpa Krantz and a lot of Krantz relatives. They are so funny! I had a great time sitting in my little float at the beach every day. I didn't care for the sand on my bare feet so much, but was very happy just sitting in my own little area. Then, I would go lay down for my nap and Uncle John would get me when I woke up. At first I was a little unsure of all the strange people, but they all act so silly I couldn't help but love them bunches! Now we are back home and to the normal routine of destruction about the house. I'm able to reach further onto the counters and tables, so Mommy and Daddy have to be sure to keep things like car keys way out of reach or they'll be stuck until they find where I put them! We have a couple weeks of vacation until Mommy has to go back to work for the coming school year. Daddy should be posting pictures from the beach soon.
7-2-06 Finally I'm walking!! It took lots of goldfish and encouragement from Mommy, Daddy, and Grandma Kappel, but I'm finally doing it pretty consistently. I'm walking more in public (sure beats crawling in those yucky places) and all over the house. I've even discovered that with walking, I'm able to climb into higher places now. Mommy found me in the jogging stroller the other day just chilling out, waiting to go for a walk. Anyway, I leave for the beach next week for a full week with Mommy's family. I love to hear people burp - I think it's a hilarious sound - so I'll be in hysterics all week Mommy says (much to Grandma Krantz's chagrin!)
6-16-06 Just had my 15 month check up. Only two shots at this appointment so it wasn't too bad. I'm now 22 pounds and 2 feet 8 inches tall. I'm a little on the light side, especially when you can compare it to my height. However, I've been like that all along, so know I'm taking after my daddy. I'm still not walking consistently - a step here and there if Mommy and Daddy aren't looking, but the doctor wasn't concerned about that. I'm also not talking yet - I babble and laugh and giggle, so it's obvious I can hear, but not saying Momma, Dadda or any of those other things I'm supposed to be saying by now. The doctor wasn't too concerned about it and said that it would probably come. However, Mommy is more concerned about it so we are going to go to the audiologist just to make sure there's nothing wrong that's keeping me from talking. Daddy says Mommy is being somewhat of a worrier, but said that it can't hurt to have things checked if it will make Mommy feel better. Meanwhile, I'll just continue babbling away and pushing my cart around moving things from one place to another. Happy Father's Day to all the Daddy's out there - we love you bunches!!
6-7-06 Just got back from a visit to Grandma and Grandpa Kappel. I'm still not walking consistently. I insist on holding a hand or something. It'll come. I did get two real pair of shoes, though. I walked around like I had cement bricks on my feet! I'm getting used to it, though. While in Florida I spent lots of time in the pool getting used to the water. We hadn't had much of a chance to get in the water at home, so it was nice. I even learned how to blow bubbles! I was so proud of myself! I have my first molar on the upper right hand side. Other than that, not much else is new. Mommy starts teaching summer school tomorrow, so I get to go back and visit my friends at Ms. Susanne's. It won't be full days, though. Anyway, I hope to be adding some exciting stuff soon - eventually I'll let Mommy and Daddy get video of me walking!
5-13-06 Here's the scoop. Mommy and Daddy were eating dinner and I was just hanging out before bedtime. I've been close for a long time now - cruising all over the place, even walking holding on to just one hand, but never independently - despite Mommy and Daddy's best efforts. So, I was chilling at the end of the couch - newspaper in one hand - when I let go of the couch and just stood there. At this point, Daddy grabbed Mommy and whispered, "Look!" Very carefully, I took three steps. I decided that was enough for the day and squatted down to the ground. They were so excited (well, Daddy was - Mommy has mixed emotions about the whole thing). I haven't repeated that trick yet - despite Ms. Susanne's best efforts while Mommy is at work. I like to do things in my own time and at my own pace - not because anyone wants me to. I guess that's a little bit of Mommy's side of the family coming out in me :o) Maybe I'll let them get it on a video clip to share on this site - no promises!!
4/19/06 Let's see - I haven't really accomplished any new tricks yet - still working on walking and talking. I had a rough time at the end of Mommy's spring break. I developed a fever the Sunday before she had to go back to work of almost 104. Mommy called the advice nurse who said it could be a reaction to my MMR (stupid shots) and just keep giving me tylenol. I'm such a good boy that I wasn't crying or anything - just a little quieter than usual. So, off to the sitter I went on Monday and everything seemed to be fine with the tylenol. Mommy had no idea how long the fever should last. On Tuesday, she didn't want to continue with the tylenol because she thought I should be over it. I didn't complain at all at the sitter's, but when I got home she discovered my fever was still 103. Now she started to worry, but the nurse told her to just keep giving me tylenol when she called again. After a rough Tuesday night (I NEVER wake up in the night I'm such a good sleeper), Mommy had enough. Daddy stayed home with me so I could rest and Mommy made me a doctor's appt. Turned out her Mommy's intuition was correct, I had a double ear infection - lots of fluid behind one of the ears, and a very red throat. Guess it's a good thing she took me in! So, I'm all better now and had a very fun Easter with my family. Grandma and Grandpa Krantz made the long drive from Indiana to help me find those eggs. Grandpa is very pesky which makes me laugh hysterically at first, but then I have to get a little vocal sometimes to let him know ENOUGH pushing me around!! Grandma gets me all kinds of cool clothes. I have some really cute outfits from her recent cruise to the Caribbean. Anyway, it was a lot of fun. Now I'm getting ready to fly with Mommy and Daddy to Dallas to visit all kinds of Daddy's family. They're leaving me with Daddy's cousin while he and Mommy go party with his franternity brothers at Danny's wedding. Why can't I go????? Soon enough I'll be a wild man on the town. It will probably require me to be up past 7 though...
04/05/06 Finally had my one year checkup on Monday. According to their measurements I shrunk! I guess that means the measurements were off on my 9 month checkup. This time I measured 30 inches and 20 pounds. I got all sorts of shots that hurt a lot! I got my MMR, Hepatitis A, PCV and varicella (chicken pox). Sometimes Mommy wonders if she really should have me receive all these - she survived the chicken pox just fine, and you read all those reports about vaccinations and the relationship to autism... She just wants to make sure I grow up healthy and strong - what do I know? The day after my shots I was pretty grumpy and sore. It didn't help that I developed pink eye the next day. Sophie wasn't happy either 'cuz she got her shots at the vet and has an ear fungus and paw itchies that she's chewed. Mommy is really enjoying her spring break medicating everyone. I'm not talking or walking yet - but I'm definitely very close on both. I got to visit Auntie Sara today while Mommy and Daddy went on an appointment to plan for my college (they've decided no Ivy League school). After I got over my initial fear (stranger anxiety is peaking right now), we had a very nice time. She stuffed me full of snacks - including my first peanut butter - yum! Mommy's spring break is almost over, and then I'll have to go back to my earlier schedule and visiting Miss Susanne. I wonder if I'll remember her...
3/28/06 Had my first professional haircut last Saturday. It wasn't too bad. I really wanted to see what the lady was doing, and that made it hard for her to cut my hair. Then, when Mommy and Daddy tried to hold my head still that really made me mad!! However, a young, cute girl there came and started talking to me, so I sat really still to look at her. She was so nice. I'm not walking yet - I was sick all last week with roseola. Boy did I sleep a LOT!! So, I've regressed just a little bit to walking holding on to two hands instead of one. I'm also doing a camel hump walk. Not a crawl on my knees, but crawling with my behind up in the air. I'm starting to wave bye bye and clap like real people do (not the smacking together of my hands like I used to). I'm still not talking, but I do make all kinds of sounds. I like to call Sophie and the kitty "SSSS", but that's about it. I go to the doctor next week for my one year check up and shots. Mommy can't wait for the height and weight measurements, but I can sure wait for those shots - really don't want to think about that!
3/15/06 What a whirlwind day!! I had such an awesome birthday! After a leisurely breakfast in bed with Mommy and Daddy I went to the new Atlanta Aquarium with Grandma/Grandpa Kappel and Auntie Sara. It was amazing. I especially loved watching the belugas. I came home and had my birthday dinner, cake and presents. I wasn't so sure about the cake - really liked the icing, but not the cake so much. I had lots of fun playing with my new toys and riding in my wagon with the neighbor girls. It's hard to believe that one year has gone by already! Thank you for all the cards and nice messages. It's been a memorable year - can't wait for #2!! (Year two, not sibling...)
3/11/06 One year is just a couple days away! Has this been a busy year! I've busy working on walking (not quite there yet!), but I'm a super fast crawler and really good at walking behind my little cart. I'm no longer the baby at day care. Mommy's friend's little girl, Ella, has joined me. Her mommy works with mine. Somehow Miss Tricia gets Ella way before Mommy gets me. Wonder what takes her so long? Anyway, just got over a really bad case of diaper rash - no more orange juice for a while I guess. I'm really excited about my one year birthday - I'm going to go to the new Atlanta aquarium with Grandma/Grandpa Kappel, Auntie Sara and Mommy and Daddy (they're playing hooky from work). Mommy thinks she's going to make me a cake - we'll see how that goes. Hope all is well and I'll put pictures of my birthday on as soon as I can!!
2/13/06 Getting ready for my last first holiday. It's so nice hearing from everyone in the guest book. I really like hearing from Mommy's teachers (I know her students like it too!) I know that they will some day be able to tell me all sorts of gossip!! I'm still working on moving from baby food to table food. It depends on the day of the week the food I will eat. I've stopped eating green beans, but ate up the black beans that came with Mommy's fajitas the other night. Spaghetti was a lot of fun. I wanted nothing to do with it at first, but after I got to play with it for a while I decided I liked it. It's a never ending battle for Mommy to make sure that I get all the stuff I'm supposed to. Sophie is really enjoying my adventures in eating (since most of it goes in my lap or on the floor). One year is just around the corner!!
02/08/06 - Well, it's been hard getting back into the routine after vacationing for so long. I'm back at day care with Ms. Susanne and the other kids, where I learn something new every day. Unfortunately, walking is not one of them. Of course, Mommy's in no hurry to see me learn to walk. She's afraid that once I start walking, there's nothing really left until I leave for college. She even told Susanne to push me back down if I started taking steps! Wow - I hope no one from the State read that...
1/15/06 10 months old already! How did that happen? I now have 4 teeth on the top - they've finally poked through. I'm a super fast crawler now. I'll be in one spot in the family room, and next thing Mommy and Daddy know I'm splashing all the water out of Sophie's water dish - what a mess! I'm getting better at shoveling the food in - the majority is making it in my mouth and not on the lap. Sophie loves helping clean up after me. We've really gotten to be good friends - she shares her bones and toys - they are so much more interesting then all the other stuff I've gotten that Mommy prefers I play with. I'm standing up all the time, and even taking some steps with support from Daddy - which really makes Mommy sad 'cuz she wants me to stay like this forever. Too bad for her! I've got things to do! Gotta run off to my next adventure - wonder what this black thing with all the buttons does that Daddy seems to like so much?
1/10/06 Back to the grind! Vacation was so cool - I really enjoy travelling! My first amusement park ride that I went on was at Epcot - Spaceship Earth. I enjoyed the dark coolness of it. While Mommy and Daddy were enjoying adult rides, I hung out and napped with Grandma and Grandpa Kappel. At one point, Mommy and Daddy left me napping peacefully. When they came back, Mommy had quite a surprise! In true, antagonistic fashion Grandma Kappel had made me a very nice Ohio State turtleneck that she changed me into on the sly. I guess that had something to do with why the Irish lost... Disney was great!! I enjoyed the music and lights and people. There was so much going on I didn't nap quite as much. I got my first mouse ears (I'm so cool) and had an awesome time! It's a Small World and the Buzz Lightyear ride were my favorites by far. Then, Grandma and Grandpa took me home for bedtime while Mommy and Daddy partied. Now, it's back to work. I went back to Suzanne's today - I missed my little friends. First thing I did when I got there this morning was crawl over to my girlfriend and tried to crawl on her. However, I still missed Mommy and came crawling as fast as I could to her when she came to pick me up.
1/4/06 I'm still on vacation (aren't I always?), but trying to get new pictures and updates on. I travelled with Mommy, Daddy and Sophie to Florida to visit Grandma and Grandpa Kappel for Christmas. Santa was good to me - got lots of cool toys from my aunts and other friends. I got a really cool rocking horse from Mommy's parents - it does everything except eat and make dirty diapers! Daddy's parents got me a really cool set of Baby Einstein DVD's - I feel smarter already! After Christmas I went down to Key West to visit Grandma and Grandpa Krantz with Aunt Sara in the motorhome. I had a very relaxing week beaching it (look for new video soon) and shopping. Grandpa tried to teach me all kinds of tricks. The weather was perfect and I am now completely over my cold. I guess that means it's time to head back north. I now crawl all over the place, and pull myself to standing. I'm getting better at feeding myself - I love bananas! Next week Mommy and Daddy have to go back to work and I have to get back on my schedule of getting up early. I've started sleeping a little later during vacation - 7:30 am. Mommy and Daddy are really sad because they have enjoyed just watching me play and learn things. I can't wait for all the fun adventures of 2006!!!
12/17/05 Whoops! It's been a little while since I've updated this page. I've been very busy crawling all over the place, chewing the dog's bone, and trying to catch the kitty. Then, this past week was a rough one. I started with a runny nose and cough last weekend - no biggie, but Monday evening I had a fever. On Wednesday Daddy took me to the doctor and I have an ear infection in both ears! So, I started my first course of antibiotics. Then, Mommy took me for my regular 9 month check up. I weigh 17 pounds 8 oz (in the 10%), but am 30.5 inches (in the 95%!!). The doctor wasn't concerned about my weight at all. She said that once I started cruising around so much that I burn more calories and don't gain as much weight. Mommy's still going to try and stuff me as much as she can!! However, the doctor was not happy with the way my chest was sounding. After a few stressful moments and a chest xray pneumonia was ruled out and just diagnosed as bronchitis/RSV. So, I have to take nebulizer breathing treatments until my cough is all gone and was given a new antibiotic. Such is the life in daycare I guess. By the time I start real school I'll already have gone through all these illnesses and probably get perfect attendance!! I'm really excited about my first Christmas!! I got to meet that Santa fellow earlier this week - he was so nice. Mommy and Daddy have lost their home computer to lightening, so we can't put that picture on, but I really liked meeting him! I'll have lots new pictures in the new year with my grandparents. I even get to meet some guy named Mickey Mouse at this place called Disney. We'll see what I think about that!!
