28.02.2010 - We sure wish you could all see how much Kenny's riding abilities have improved over the last few weeks!  He has been taking horseback riding lessons for about 16 months, but recently Coach Deva has begun getting him to do more on his own.  Kenny is now able to control his pony much better than before and is able to pull him to a stop.  We've uploaded a few photos and videos.

On a sad note, Kenny's usual pony -- Greta -- is really starting to show her age and is losing weight and having some trouble breathing.  Greta has been a great teacher for Kenny and they really get along well with each other.  She comes to the window of her stall to watch as Kenny comes for his lessons.  We hope she gets better soon, but in the meantime Ken's also developing a good working relationship with Pip.

Things at school have been going well for all three of us.  We hope you're doing well, too, no matter where you are in this big world!  Take care and we'll update again soon ...

16.02.2010 - LITTLE KENNY IS EIGHT YEARS OLD TODAY!!  And we had a wonderful birthday weekend together.  It started on Saturday morning with a great horse-riding lesson, followed by a really nice Reunion Luncheon with Gong Gong and Po Po to celebrate the eve of Chinese New Year.

After our seafood lunch, we continued on down the highway and caught the ferry in Lumut to take us over to Pangkor Island.  We checked into a beach resort for two nights and spent our time swimming in the big pool, playing in the surf and going on a sunset cruise.  The hotel even put on a special presentation with lion dancers for Chinese New Year.  Kenny had a lovely time with all our activities and really enjoyed turning eight years old.  The hotel house-band even came over to our table to sing "Happy Birthday" just for Kenny (he was a little embarrassed at that, though!)

So, it was a very nice holiday and a super way to celebrate eight years with our little prince.  We took a lot of photos and videos, so please feel free to check out all the latest updates throughout the site.  We'll update again before too long.

17.10.2009 - October has been a pretty eventful month for Little Kenny and his family, with lots of outings and day-trips around Malaysia and a whole bunch of exciting new things to do at home!!  A couple of weeks ago, we travelled to Cyberjaya to spend the Mooncake Festival at Kenny's favourite-hotel-in-the-world, Cyberview Lodge.  He spent hours in the pool and stayed up late to light the Chinese lanterns he and Mommy had purchased before leaving Ipoh.   It was fun to set them up on the balcony and light candles all around them.  We bought three lanterns -- a Chinese fish, Donald Duck and a traditional flower-basket.  Unfortunately, the flower-basket tipped over and caught fire with a big poof!!  The following day, Kenny and Daddy went to the hotel's fishing pond and tried their luck with a few casts.

We also dropped by the Equestrian Centre in Putrajaya to watch an afternoon of the Premier Series show-jumping competition where one of Kenny's coaches from Perak was entered.  Coach Imtiaz was riding Super-Jogger and they did very well.   Kenny got really excited as we watched from the stands and later, just before we left, the little family even went for a ride in a horse-drawn carriage.  We finished up the day with a trip to the new mall in Seri Kembangan for pizza.

Then last weekend, right after Kenny's riding lesson, Mommy, Daddy and Kenny jumped in the car and drove to the coast (about 2 hours away).  We arrived in the seaport of Lumut around mid-morning and caught a ferry over to the island of Pangkor.  It was Kenny's first trip on a boat and he really enjoyed standing on the deck and feeling the ocean wind against his face.  Pulau Pangkor has a really beautiful little fishing village, with lots of colourful boats, some lovely beaches and big hills with really thick jungle.  We stopped in a restaurant for pizza and picked up a few presents for Christmas in the curio shops before climbing back on the boat and heading back across the bay to Lumut and the drive home.  We're hoping to go back and stay overnight sometime next month.

Mommy and Daddy have been a little busy with the end of their respective semesters just around the corner and lots of assignments to grade.  And, Kenny has been keeping up his reading practice at Vital Years, his riding lessons and a busy schedule of activities in and out of the classroom.  All and all, though, things are going well and we're all continuing to have a great time here in Ipoh.

We'll update again in another few weeks.  Stay in touch in the meantime ....

24.09.2009 - A lot has sure happened since our last update.  It's hard to know where to begin ...

Kenny continues to progress with his riding lessons, getting up at dawn twice a week to go to the Equestrian Centre and work with Coach Deva.  Usually, they are in the training ring where Ken is now using the reins to control his pony and is beginning to think about going into junior events at some of the upcoming competitions.  Occasionally, he and his coach will leave the training behind and just go riding together along the jungle paths next to the Centre.  There is a really beautiful trail leading down to a nearby river and they both love to go trotting along together.  We caught them on video coming back from their last outing.

By the way, we've updated the video collection at the link above to include some more recent ones, as well as a few from long ago.  It's amazing to see how fast our little boy is growing up!  Check them out if you have time ... especially the one of Kenny and Daddy dancing together in the Study!!

It's been an eventful month in other ways, too.  Late in August, Daddy attended the Convocation at MMU to receive his PhD from Chancellor Tun Siti Hasmah, along with many of his former students and Kenny's lovely friend Jessica.  It was a nice day.

Mommy has moved to the Perak campus of Universiti Institute of MARA, which is much more established than her last place and situated closer to daddy's campus in Bandar Seri Iskandar.  So far, the change has been a really good one.  She's teaching "International Business" and "Personal Development" in the Faculty of Business Management.  Daddy's semester is about 2/3 finished now and he's teaching his usual courses in "Management & Organisational Behaviour" and "General Psychology".

And just earlier this week, the little family celebrated Gong Gong's birthday at a very nice Korean buffet.  We had all sorts of Korean dishes and pandan cake ... but, not surprisingly, Kenny's favourite part was when we made the trip to the ice cream cooler for dessert!  He's getting pretty good with the ice cream scoop!!

Lots more adventures coming up this month and we'll keep Kenny's site updated as the time flies by.  We sure miss you all ....

23.08.2009 - Wow, it has been a really long time since we last updated Kenny's website.  Time just seems to be flying by for all three of us here.  Check out the "pictures" link and you can see some of our highlights over the last few months.

A couple of months ago, we went to Penang to watch the Malaysian National Equestrian Championships. Kenny wasn't competing, but it was his first big horseshow and he loved all the excitement and colour.  He took along his helmet and got a little riding in on the site, and cheered on Coach Fariz and Coach Imtiaz as they competed in the dressage and show-jumping events respectively.  We stayed in a really nice place called the G-Hotel and Kenny had a great time at the seafood buffet and (of course) the swimming pool.  It was a very nice little holiday and we can't wait to go on another one soon.

Speaking of horse-riding, Kenny continues to make some really good progress.  His usual horse (Greta) pulled up lame a couple of weeks ago and is taking treatment now, so he has been riding a much younger and more spirited fellow named Bush Baby.  BB isn't at all easy to ride, but Kenny has been doing very well.  We're extremely proud of him.

We'll get back to updating the site more regularly from now on and will add some photos of Daddy's convocation and some of our other family activities shortly.  In all, though, everything is continuing to go really well and we think of you all often.

19.03.2009 - Kenny looks forward twice a week to his lessons at the Perak Equestrian Training Centre ... and his horsemanship is really showing big improvements!  Lately, Coach Deva has been showing him how to get into a show-jumping position in the saddle and then ride quickly over some poles that have been placed on the ground in the training ring.  Kenny really loves that, as it gives him a chance to display his riding skills.

Usually, he rides either Greta or Pip.  Both are very nice ponies.  Check out the videos of Kenny, Pip, Coach Deva and Helmis trotting over the poles at Kenny's most recent lesson!

Last Sunday, Mommy had to attend the UTAR graduation in Kuala Lumpur so the little family drove down to spend a very nice weekend in the Nikko Hotel. As expected, Kenny went nuts over the big swimming pool in the hotel and spent all of Sunday morning diving into the water and swimming. We all went shopping in the Twin Towers, watched the water fountains while we ate dinner and did a little shopping at Daddy's favourite bookstore. It was a great little trip!

16.02.09 - HAPPY BIRTHDAY, KENNY!  Our little Prince turned SEVEN years old today!

And we all had a great birthday weekend, starting on Saturday with a riding lesson with Greta and Coach Deva at the Perak Equestrian Training Centre ... and then trips to the Ipoh Polo Grounds on Saturday and Sunday to play on the swings and the climbing apparatus.  At school on Monday, the class threw a lovely party, with presents, games, lots of pictures and cake!  After reading class that evening, we all went to Pizza Hut (Kenny's favourite restaurant in the whole world) for family presents, pizza, tempura prawns, ice cream and (more) cake!  He received birthday cards from Auntie Cyn and Grandma, and read them over and over. It's hard to believe he's growing up so fast.  It was a great birthday celebration, but could have been a lot better if you'd been here to join in with us...

05.01.2009 - Kenny went to the beach!! The little family jumped in the car after work on Friday and drove north through the mountains to the Island of Penang for a two-day holiday. We checked into Bayview Hotel at Batu Ferringhi and, not surprisingly, Kenny had jumped into the pool in a matter of minutes. We had a really wonderful weekend, building sandcastles on the beach, sampling the buffet breakfasts & lunches and Mommy even went for a nice spa. It was Kenny's first time at the ocean ... and he loved wading in to about waist level before Mom and Dad made him come back! We also visited the state aquarium, where Kenny got to see some big turtles close up and then feed the big goldfish in an outdoor pond. Earlier, we took in the beautiful botanical gardens with lots of monkeys, waterfall and lovely flowers. Finally, it was back into the car for the drive back to Ipoh and a reluctant return to a more routine week. Kenny still looks at our photos of the trip and can't wait to get back to the ocean again next time!

25.12.2008 - Merry Christmas everyone!  We've had a beautiful day in Ipoh with lots of happiness, surprises and fun!

All week long, Kenny has been busy wrapping presents and waiting for the Big Day to arrive.   On Christmas Eve, Gong Gong and Auntie Siew Poh dropped by for a nice visit and dinner.  Then it was off to bed to fall asleep with some difficulty, waiting for the morning to come.

When the morning finally arrived, Kenny was downstairs like a shot to find a new bicycle waiting for him under the tree.  He couldn't wait to take it for a spin, first around the Living Hall and then outside in the patio.  With the training wheels, he's getting the hang of it very quickly.  We were happy to see that he already insists on wearing his helmet, even when he's just in the yard at home.

We all opened stockings, and Kenny found a package of his favourite rice crackers and other snacks, as well as some new CDs, school supplies and workbooks.  He was really happy.  Right afterward, all three of us headed off for a yummy breakfast at Peng Tau, the Chinese restaurant just up the street from our house.  Kenny brought macaroni from home, while Mommy and Daddy had curried noodles and some peppery soup.

Then it was back to sit under the tree and open up all our presents.  Everyone seemed to get what they wanted and a few surprises also.  Kenny got a new set of puzzles and flash-cards and a whole lot of very nice clothes, including a wonderful t-shirt from Auntie Siew Poh and a pair of purple Barney slippers from Auntie Jasmine.  Teacher Andrea gave him a toy car.   He really loved them all.

What probably got him most excited, though, was when he realized he was getting Daddy's old computer and flat-screen monitor all for himself. He now has a little work-station in our upstairs library and spent most of the day looking at his favourite You Tube videos over and over and over.  He found a version of Diana Krall singing Jingle Bells with her big band ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WFHE0NxBJu4 )  and didn't seem to want to leave it. He's becoming quite a jazz and blues fan, even at Christmas!

We had our Christmas turkey in the evening and it was a great success.  Kenny opted for potato chips instead of mashed.  Then it was time for just one more Sesame Street video and singing Jingle Bells and a few carols before bedtime.  He was alseep almost as soon as his little head touched the pillow.

So, in all, it was a perfect Christmas!  The weather was hot and sunny, but there was a nice breeze through most of the day, just enough to rustle the leaves of the fruit trees in Daddy's patio garden.  We kept thinking of everyone in Canada contending with all the snowstorms we've been hearing about!

Mom and Dad had a really nice day, also, although we find that we've really been missing family and friends from both near and far this year.  Mommy got a nice cactus garden for her office at UTAR and a new set of pots, as well as an Inukshuk necklace from Grandma Downe. Daddy got some really interesting reading material, some new ties and is overjoyed with the 22-inch flat monitor that Mom gave him.  The day could only have been better if we'd been able to visit with you all.

Next week promises to be a busy one, with a long weekend and two horseback lessons at the Equestrian Centre.  No doubt there are all sorts of exciting adventures just around the corner for Kenny and his little family, and we'll post them here as they take place.

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU ALL, WITH LOVE FROM THE DOWNE FAMILY!!

Your Christmas day sounded wonderful. Such a lot of nice gifts. I enjoyed mine as I said on the phone. I especially liked hearing your voices.
Lots of love,
  - Grandma Downe alias Mum

21.12.2008 - Christmas is just around the corner and Kenny, Daddy and Mommy are almost all ready for another great one this year!  The tree is all decorated, the stockings have been hung, plans are in place for Christmas dinner and most of the shopping has been completed.   We just wish all of you could be here to join us!  Merry Christmas, everyone!  With love from Alan, Siew-Phaik and, of course, Little Kenny!!!

I wish I could be there with you. Christmas is such good fun.
With love,

06.12.2008 - Wow, it has been a long long time since we updated the website... There have been a lot of happenings during the last couple of months.  Perhaps most notably, Kenny was admitted to the Ipoh Specialist Hospital for a week after 6 days of on-and-off high fever. It was worriesome but the little family rode through it with great support from relatives, friends and medical staff.   He's fully recovered now and is back to his usual bouncy self!

Kenny has lost two of his milk teeth... our little man is really growing up.

We had a great time when Mommy's former classmate and Kenny's longtime friend, Jasmine Lee, visited Ipoh on her way to a business trip midway through November.   Although it had been more than two years since Kenny had last seen her, he remembered his "Aunty Jas" really well and couldn't wait to give her a big hug!

The other big news is that Kenny has completed his first riding assessment and has started regular lessons with Coach Deva on Saturday and Tuesday mornings at the Perak Equestrian Centre.  He has only had a couple of lessons so far, but is already making lots of progress, learning to sit properly in the saddle while his pony is walking and trotting.  He likes it most when he can "go fast"!  We went to Kuala Lumpur last week and got him outfitted with a special riding helmet, jodhpurs, boots and gloves.

While we were in Kuala Lumpur , we stayed over at the Cyberview Lodge and Kenny, as usual, enjoyed jumping into the pool there.  (When we first arrived, he went running out across the grounds and jumped into the pool with his clothes on, before Mommy could even finish checking in!)  We went out to have Korean food and Kenny ate rice until he broke down laughing and laughing.  It was a wonderful little holiday and we all came back to Ipoh very happy and relaxed!

We will put the christmas tree up this weekend.  That will be fun and exciting! Come and check back often for more pictures and  videos!

HAPPY HOLIDAY!

05.10.2008 - Kenny started riding horseback at the Perak Equestrian Training Centre about three weeks ago and it has turned out to be one of his favourite current activities.  He goes about twice a week.  So far, he's just getting used to sitting in the saddle and walking around the dirt track.  He's hoping to start formal lessons sometime after Christmas, and is already showing a lot of promise.

Kenny rides different horses each time he goes but he has two real favourites, Misty and Greta.  Both are very gentle and respond well to him when he's in the saddle.  Although neither are very big, Kenny still has to climb up a special ramp to get mounted.

He's been busy with other things too!  Last weekend, Kenny and Mommy mixed up some flour, whipped cream and water on his table and drew designs in the dough.  He couldn't stop laughing at all the 'happy faces' they could draw in the mixture.

30.09.2008 - Our little Prince took his first trip to the hospital yesterday.  He was playing outside at his grandparents' house and decided to try standing on one foot on Gong Gong's motorcycle and ... ooops!  He took a knock on his forehead on the way down and cut himself on the fence.   It was bleeding quite profusely so Mommy called Gong Gong who came racing from work to pick him up and courier him to the hospital (Daddy was still on campus about 40 minutes away).  At the hospital they cleaned the little boy up and put a dressing on his forehead.  No stitches were needed, fortunately.  Gong Gong summed up the whole incident best: "A 50-cent reaction for a 5-cent injury!"

19.09.2008 - Last weekend was the Mooncake Festival, a mid-Autumn celebration that originated in China but is widely celebrated here in Malaysia.  Kenny was really taken with the paper lanterns and candles, but didn't care much for the mooncake!  Mommy showed Kenny how to carefully light the lanterns and hang them up in our patio.  He kept wanting to sing "happy birthday" when lighting and blowing out the candles!

01.09.2008 - So many exciting things happened in August, it is hard to know where to begin!  Mommy left on her big trip to California at the beginning of the month and attended the American Academy of Management conference where she presented her paper on strategic alliances.  She did some sightseeing and shopping all around Anaheim and had a great visit at Disneyland, giving Mickey and Minnie all the best from Kenny.  After the conference, she flew to Calgary, Canada where she spent a couple of lovely days with Auntie Cyn and met up with Amanda and Vincent again.   Lovely breakfasts, listening to Cyn play the piano and touring around Calgary was a really wonderful way to end the trip.

Meanwhile, Kenny, Daddy, Po Po and Gong Gong all coped amazingly well over the 10-day period when Mommy was away.  Kenny was an especially good boy, working hard at his schoolwork and settling into new routines very nicely.  His reading skills are coming along very well and he spends a half hour or so most evenings before bed working his way through his collection of Ladybird readers.  He's still attending the Vital Years reading programme three times a week, also, where he sometimes likes to spend as much time playing tag as he does with the reading books.

A few weeks ago, a dentist came to the Lighthouse School where he attends kindergarten and Kenny seemed to really enjoy the presentation about looking after his teeth.  He had a check-up and received top marks for brushing and eating the right things!

Mommy brought back a silver scooter for Kenny from California and it was an immediate hit.  After only a couple of tries, he became really adept at zooming around the large patio outside our house in Ipoh and is now hinting about taking it for a spin on the highway.  He'll have to wait a little while for that, though!

Most weekends, we go to the big park at the Ipoh polo grounds, where Kenny continues to love flying high in the swings, climbing up the slides and riding like mad on the rocking horses.   He can run really fast, too.

This past weekend was the Merdeka (Independence) Day holiday here in Malaysia and Kenny celebrated by getting a new wading pool and spent hours splashing away happily. If he were allowed to, we're sure he would stay in the pool until he turned blue!

As for Daddy, his new semester at UTP is now almost half over.  It's amazing how fast the time flies by.  On August 20-21, he was back in Kuala Lumpur to chair the 5th Annual Contact Centre Asia Conference, hearing some good presentations and meeting new colleagues from around the region.

So all and all, things continue to go very well for the little family.   Ipoh is really feeling like our first home these days and, between school, work and playtime there never seems to be a shortage of things going on.  Be sure to check out the latest photos (there's lots of them) and videos of Mommy's trip to Anaheim and Kenny's activities on these links.  We'll write again soon ...

6.6.2008 - It has been an eventful month for the little Downe family. Weekends were filled with activities. A couple of weeks ago, Kenny, Mommy and Daddy went to Padang Ipoh ("Ipoh field" to feed the flock of doves that seems to be there all the time. It took a little while for Kenny to warm up to the birds, but as soon as he realised that they would not harm him, he really immersed himself in throwing fresh peas for them to gobble up. He really seemed to enjoy having them follow him around until all the peas were used up!

A little later on, the little boy got to go to visit UTAR where mommy works as a lecturer. The university is about a 40-minute drive from our house in Ipoh. When we got there, Kenny explored all around the campus and skipped down to the small lake there. It was a very hot afternoon and we all went for "ABC" a famous crushed-ice drink in the Kampar old town. Kenny had his with three scoops of ice cream. He sang nursery rhyme songs all the way home.

Last weekend, we had a special treat as Jessica and Sunny, two of our friends from Kuala Lumpur, dropped by on their way to Cameron Highlands. Jessica and Daddy taught together at MMU while Daddy was there and they are collaborating on a couple of research projects. This was their first visit to our new home and we had a very nice weekend looking for new places to eat and driving down to Daddy's campus at Universiti Teknologi Petronas in Tronoh. Sunny brought a remote-controlled car for Kenny and the little boy has been working hard to drive it as fast as possible all over our patio outside. Kenny really seemed to get along nicely with Jessica and keeps watching for his friends to return.

17.05.2008 - Wow, Kenny has really been busy! Last weekend, we celebrated Mother's day by taking Kenny going to the waterpark called "The Lost World of Tambun". He had a great time playing in the water. After he got home, he and Mommy washed the car -- it turned into more watery fun. There was still lots of time for homework and for some practice with his new keyboard. He's getting pretty good at pecking out "Mary Had a Little Lamb" (with help).

The good people at Babyhomepages put together a little song for him -- dooby doo dooby, Kenny I like YOU!

27.04.2008 - Kenny has been staying busy with lots of little trips and adventures.  He really loves going to a public park near  the Ipoh old-town  where they have a very nice pool with fountains.  His other favourite park is the Ipoh Polo Grounds, because it seems to have the highest-flying swings in the world!  There are always lots of children there.

Last weekend, Kenny, Gong-Gong, Daddy and Mommy spent part of the day roaming around the campus at Universiti Teknologi Petronas, where Daddy works.  It's a huge campus with lots of high-tech buildings and some beautiful gardens, all surrounded by jungle.  Kenny really loved climbing up and down the stairs and racing around the garden paths.

23.03.2008 - Kenny really looks forward to every weekend now, because that's the time the little family has been reserving for going on special adventures around Ipoh.  There's a lot to do in the state of Perak - today, for instance, Gong-Gong, Daddy, Mommy and Kenny drove north to Taipeng, a little Chinese community and went to the zoo.  Kenny laughed at the monkeys and waved at the lions with Mommy, but seemed to enjoy seeing the deer paddock the most.  Well, actually, he enjoyed the ice cream shoppe the most, but the deer were pretty nice too!

The rest of the weekend was fun, too.  Kenny has a new bubble-gun in the shape of an elephant and has a lot of fun squeezing off streams of bubbles every hot afternoon.  He has also taken to helping Daddy plant flowers and shrubs for the big patio outside our house.  He helped transplant a couple of new citrus trees that we're hoping will grow big and produce lots of little limes for Daddy and Mommy to put in their tea and is turning out to be pretty good with the watering can.  We also spent some time cooking up Mom's meatloaf recipe, too.  Kenny chopped up the mushrooms and peppers and then stirred the mixture.

So, in all, things are continuing to go well for us here.  The lifestyle here in Ipoh is a bit more relaxed and is giving us a chance to do a lot of neat things together.  Keep checking back so we can update you on our latest updates!

10.03.2008 - With moving and starting new jobs, the little family hadn't been having much "fun time" recently so we took last weekend off for a nice little holiday.   We drove back to Putrajaya and spent Saturday and Sunday at Cyberview Lodge - Kenny's favourite hotel in the whole world.   On the way, we stopped at a mall for a little shopping and a sushi lunch (Kenny had rice!).   Then it was on to the hotel, where he spent hours running across the lawns, exploring the grounds and splashing in the swimming pool. He liked swinging back and forth in a big hammock most of all!   Later that evening, he got online from the computer in the hotel room to check out his website and re-read all your lovely messages in the guest-book!

The next morning, he woke up Daddy and Mommy nice and early and, after a big buffet breakfast, it was back into the pool again.   Daddy spent some of the time eating oranges and reading the newspaper in the sunshine, while Mommy tried to ride Kenny's inflatable motorcycle.   Finally, we all climbed back into the car and made the trip back to Ipoh to get ready for nursery school, lecture preparations and another week of adventures!
