Mickey's birthday party was a big hit! Daddy spent two days getting the food and the cake ready. It was a delicious barbecue blowout! YUMMY! Mickey had a blast running around with his friends in the backyard (his favorite place to be), and the adults enjoyed the beautiful garden (also tended to by Daddy). There was even a bean bag game and a fishing game!!!! The next morning, on Mickey's actual birthday, more presents were opened, trains were played with all day, books were dragged all over NYC, and then it was back home for more presents and more birthday cake. By the end of the day, Mickey was one exhausted, but happy boy. Mickey went to Staten Island this week to visit Papa's friend Vaness and her son Alex. Well....they have a pool in the backyard (it actually takes up the whole backyard). Mickey was rather wary at first, but by the end of our visit he was jumping in the water and swimming (with a floatie on) by himself. When it was time to go (because Papa's pasty skin was fried!), there were quite a bit of tears shed. It is hard to leave when something is so fun. We will have to go back! Papa's an adjunct professor at Pace University and he agreed to teach a two and half week day class this summer, which Mickey would get to spend all day for two and half weeks with a babysitter. Yee haw. Not. Well, sorta. The Papa and Daddy exit the first day was rough, to put it mildly. The second day was a little less so. The third day it was like, "Okay, I'm leaving for work." "BYE!" And off he went to eat his Cheerios and watch the Doodlebops with Uncle Patrick. Replaced so easily. By the end of the two and a half weeks, Mickey and Uncle Patrick were fast buddies. So the trip to Grandma Ruby and Grandpa Jim's was very fun. We were all very excited about flying to Kansas City. Alright, one of us was very excited to fly, one was non-plussed and one crossed himself every five minutes. The flight was very nice and the excited one slept a good deal of the flight. Upon descent into Kansas City, Mickey's ears started popping and hurting and he had no idea what was going on so he cried and cried. He sat on Papa's lap facing Papa, while Papa hugged him and comforted him. Suddenly, he rared back and exclaimed "Pee!", which usually was an announcement, giving you time to get him to the restroom or behind a tree so business could be accomplished. Not this time. As soon as the exclamation was made the deed was done. Luckily, Papa had packed a clean change of clothes in the carryon for Mickey. Unfortunately, Papa had not packed a clean change of clothes in the carryon for Papa. Papa asked Daddy, "How does it look?" Daddy replied, "Like you peed your pants." August had arrived in Kansas City just about the same time as we did. We had days of 90+ degree weather which was perfect for swimming. Grandpa set up a great swimming pool and as soon as it was filled, off came the clothes. But someone found it just as much fun to run through the yard in his birthday suit as it was to skinny dip in the driveway. Running through the backyard was something Mickey couldn't get enough of, so much so, Daddy began to wonder just how soon they'd really be moving to the country. On Saturday, Grandma and Grandpa threw a great big barbecue for Mickey and for Kohl, Daddy's great-nephew. I don't know if it's a boy thing, but off came the clothes and more skinny dipping was had. The house and yard was packed with family and a great time was had by all. Mickey found Uncle Kevin to be a big teddy bear, while he found Aunt Lisa to be a bit scary. When Aunt Lisa was Mickey's age she was terrified of Cousin Vince, so now it's her turn to have a little one scared of her! On Monday, Uncle Kevin pulled Grandpa Foon's rods and reels out of the cobwebs and we went fishin' in Wyandotte County Lake. It was raining, and had been raining, so the bank was a slippery, muddy mess. Though we tried several fishin' spots, including one made famous by Grandpa Foon and his log, not one fish tugged on our lines. Muddy and wet, we trudged over to the scariest complex of restaurants, movie theaters, hotels, shops and race cars for some good, ol' Kansas City barbecue at Arthur Bryants. Mm, mmmmm! On Tuesday, Mickey, Papa and Daddy went to the Kansas City Zoo. Mickey got to see many animals he had so far only seen in picture books. He even got to feed some deer, an act that is now old hat having fed sheep and goats at the Central Park Zoo several weeks before. Most of our visit was spent hanging around Grandma and Grandpa's house, running and playing in the backyard with all the toys they had bought for Mickey's visit. Nights were spent in front of the television working our way through their Disney movie library. The airplane trip home was delayed two hours, but Mickey kept himself entertained by running laps around banks of chairs in a quiet part of the airport. Daddy kept Mickey entertained during the flight reading the new books his new cousins and uncles had given him at his welcoming party. As we approached the NYC area the pilot informed us we were going to have to divert to Allentown, Pennsylvania as the holding pattern in Newark would require us to be in the air longer than what we had fuel for. Daddy's eyes rolled up into his head - the very thought of landing twice in one night and Mickey's ears popping and bladder releasing was too much to bear. Mickey was beginning to get antsy, so Daddy looked him square in the eye and pleaded, "Lookit. You're tired. Papa's tired. I'm tired, and everyone around you is tired. Please, HOLD IT TOGETHER!" Daddy suggested, "Why don't you lay down here in my lap and close your eyes?" Mickey thought it was a good idea and soon drifted off to sleep. Luckily, we were cleared to land in Newark, so no Allentown. We finally got home around 1 and into bed around 2, when we should have been in bed by 10. Ah, well. It was a great trip nonetheless. Tomorrow, Mickey, Papa and Daddy get on an airplane and fly three hours to Kansas City where they'll stay for a week with Grandma Ruby and Grandpa Jim. We're not quite sure if Mickey gets the concept of two sets of Grandmas and Grandpas, but we'll see how weird it is when he gets off the plane and Ma and Pa Kettle are waiting there, ready to wrap their arms around him and smother him in kisses. When he hears the words Grandma and Grandpa, does he only think of Grandma Linda and Grandpa Dale? Will he be confused? Frightened? (Well, frightened is an understatement. I'm frightened when I get off a plane and Grandpa Jim smothers me in kisses, but that's a whole other story!) Grandma and Grandpa Mansell are going to be having a shindig for Mickey on Saturday, so that should be interesting. We might go fishing with Uncle Kevin. Mickey's afraid of worms, so I can't wait. We might go to the zoo. But that should be okay as he's been to the zoo a few times already. We know tigers are scary and penguins are stinky. What more could the Kansas City Zoo offer that could change his life? So I think we're safe there. The relatives and friends are a whole other level of scary and we'll see how we survive Saturday. Stay tuned, I'll keep you posted. The Wizard of Oz is a scary movie. To a two and a half year old. Full of freaky characters and minor chords. One right after the other. Barely a reprieve. This is Daddy's favorite movie of all time. So after dinner we decided to get some chips and sauce and sodas and watch The Wizard of Oz. Well, it's scary from the get go and then there's a tornado and a witch and a lion and flying monkies and a floating head and a lot of angst and chasing and crying and sky writing. Between the spicy sauce for the chips and the blasted movie, which he did watch to the end, if even trying not to, we expect it to be a bumpy night. Goodnight. Last Friday, Mickey, Papa and Daddy loaded into the car and headed for Elkridge, Maryland, just outside Baltimore, to visit Great Uncle Bernie and Mark. Our great neighbor, Nancy, was dutifully handing out hugs and kisses on demand to Misty and Maxwell for the weekend, so we were off for a good trip. We visited with Uncle Bernie and Mark Saturday afternoon for quite a bit before we headed back to the hotel for a nap. After our nap and before heading back to Uncle Bernie's for an abundant Chinese food dinner, Papa and Daddy gave Mickey his first dip in a swimming pool! Although it was nice outside, we were thankful the pool was inside and heated, and although Mickey didn't know any different, he was happy it was heated, too! At Uncle Bernie's that evening we continued our visit over Orange Chicken, Lemon Chicken, fried rice and wontons. It was great to catch up with Uncle Bernie and get the lowdown on all the family secrets, and hear stories about show biz and Judy Garland. While the grown-ups yakked, Daddy and Mickey ran around outside and played on a long forgotten playground. On Sunday after we said our goodbyes, we headed to Ellicot City where we looked at old trains, a funny bubble man and his bubbles, had lunch and a classic meltdown, which is not to be confused with a classic pattymelt. After our late lunch, we strapped ourselves back into our car and headed back north to home. It was a very nice trip and we look forward to making it again this summer to spend more time with Uncle Bernie and Mark. Over the Easter weekend, Mickey, Papa and Daddy stayed at Kelly's house in Westchester County. It's like going to spend the weekend at a fabulous country house for us, but it's clearly the suburbs. It was very nice to be able to open the back door and be in the backyard all day long. Mickey loved it. We barbecued chicken for dinner on Saturday and then we colored eggs for the Easter bunny. We explained to Mickey that while we were asleep, the Easter bunny would come into the house and leave him something very nice but also take all the eggs we colored and hide them in the yard. We repeated this many times to make it sink in. Sink in, it did. Sunday morning Daddy got out of bed and went out to the cool damp yard and hid the eggs. Thankfully there were only 11 to have to hide. Daddy came back inside just as Papa and Mickey headed down to the kitchen. Mickey's expression was priceless as he stood gazing at the Easter basket left for him by the Easter bunny as Daddy also displayed the now empty egg carton. After a hearty breakfast of eggs and bacon and lots of coffee, we headed out to the yard. Once again, thankfully there were only 11 eggs as the attention span of a 2.5 year old is not long. But we had fun, and sure enjoyed the willie out of Kelly & Jim's house. Thank you! Today Mickey and Daddy worked out in the backyard for hours raking leaves, picking up sticks and rocks. Daddy uncovered the biggest earthworm he ever saw and thought Mickey might want to see it. 'cared .. worm! Mickey wouldn't pick up the worm out of Daddy's hand but he would hold if Daddy put it directly into his hand. Soon enough Mickey had enough and Daddy had to let the worm go free. Nevertheless, Mickey stayed concerned over the whereabouts of that old worm. My, that worm could stretch its fat self out! Before you knew it, Mr. Worm had made a hole and had disappeared underground. Earlier in the week Papa taught Mickey a neat trick. If you have to go pee and you're no where near a bathroom, you can just pee outside! At first Mickey was undone by such a thing, but proved Saturday morning that it was quite an okay thing to do as he pee'd probably four times while Daddy raked the yard. Whenever the yard got quiet, Daddy would look up and there at the top of the hill was Mickey with his pull-up around his ankles and his little brown self whizzin' in the wind! Well...we attached the bike seat to the back of Papa's bike last weekend and away we all went. It is a lot of fun going downhill and hearing Mickey squeal, "paster!" (which mean faster) Going up the hills isn't so much fun for Papa, but Mickey likes that too. Mickey has grown an inch and is definitely heavier. His eyes are bright and his laugh is music to our ears. Today Daddy took a much needed personal day off from work and he and Mickey went to the Central Park Zoo. Much fun was had. The weather was beautiful, so thousands of school groups were there, but since Daddy is smart, we went the opposite direction through the zoo and weren't too overwhelmed by all the noisy, unruly, scary children with their even scarier teachers. I could tell you what we saw, but since pictures speak volumes, just take a look at our zoo pictures. GOOD NEWS!!! Mickey's trip to the allergist revealed no allergies to dogs, cats, dust or cockroaches (although he thinks they are gross!). He is only mildly allergic to milk, so he has discovered the joys of vanilla soy milk (yummy!). His favorite movie is now A BUGS LIFE. He watches it and then says' "Hopper Mean!" His language has gotten much better and he is stringing more and more words together. It is so amazing to watch him grow. Daddy and Papa are very proud. Mickey gives me pleasure in so many ways. Mostly they're tiny, simple and fleeting. Today we were in the basement playing cars, racing them, riding them. After about a half hour of tearing around and we were about to race them again, he looked at me with his rosey brown cheeks and said what Papa has taught him, "Mark. Get thet. Go!", and off we went. It tickles me so much to hear him say, what is for him right now, a long sentance full of ideas, in that precious little voice. Love him. Mickey continues to grow and learn in so many ways. Today he was repeating just about everything he heard anyone say. I have to be careful about what I say in traffic! We went downtown with Amy today, and did a little shopping. Mickey was fascinated with the escaltor for shopping carts only at Bed, Bath and Beyond. Then we went over and had Thai food. This was new to Mickey, but he ate up a lot of Chicken Satay (a peanut sauce), as well as every bamboo shoot on the table. Then he ate some of Amy's noodles and my rice. YUMMY! Mickey just spent 10 days visiting with his Grandma and Grandpa from North Carolina (Tom's Folks). He had a great time with them. He loved it when Grandpa played the guitar for him, and loved being tickled by Grandma. One day we all went to the zoo together. It was very cold, but the polar bear was still outside. Then we all went home and had a nice long rest! So, last Saturday Daddy took Mickey to the movies to see Curious George. We rode the subway, which Mickey LOVES. Obsessed is more like it. We got two hot dogs with ketchup, a small popcorn and a bottle of water. We had no idea if he had ever been to a movie theatre or if he had ever had popcorn, so we weren't sure how this was going to go. The hot dogs were consumed before the movie began. I saved the popcorn for the movie. I gave him a small handful to start out with, but he soon asked for more. He hadn't choked to death so I finally handed him the whole bag, which he didn't finish. I did. He was enthralled with the previews, but was kinda bored by all the talking cartoon humans. He loved the the cartoon animals because he has met them all in the books we read at nighttime. Any animal he recognized he would announce. Anytime he saw the letter A he'd announce that, too. The movie was about a half hour too long, at which time he started investigating his independence, moving one seat further from Daddy, and then another and then another till he was in the aisle. A stern look and a beckoning index finger got him back to at least the first seat. The movie seemed as if it would never end, so I gathered his shoes, which came off before hot dogs were finished, got them back on, gathered our belongs and headed home. The most exciting part of our excursion was the train - "TAIN!" Yes, "tain". Yesterday, Robert was giving Mickey his bath when I realized there was no milk for his nighttime sippy cup. I left to go get some at the corner store. When I got back, Robert said, "Mickey has something to tell you". While I was out, Robert taught Mickey to say, "No More Milk!" Mickey discovered Singin' in the Rain today. Everytime Donald O'Conner did his "Make Them Laugh" dance Mickey was rolling around on the floor imitating him. When it was over, he would simply say..."again!" Later on when we were walking the dog, I was humming the tune and Mickey started laughing and dancing to it! FUNNY!
