July 4 ~ The girls had difficulty falling asleep last night.  Both babies have been a little constipated adjusting to the rice cereal.

Today has been fussy and difficult.  While the feedings have been on schedule, their naps have been rocky.  They've both had alot of poopy diapers so I think their little bodies are adusting to the cereal.  Neither wants to go to bed tonight.  I'm overwhelmed and overstressed so I'm taking a short break.  Mike is trying to get them in the crib.  He is so amazing and patient with them.  If we are lucky, we'll all be asleep before the fireworks begin.

July 3 ~ First storytime at the Library!  Along with "reading" books, we also sang a few songs.  "Wheels on the Bus" is going to be a popular song in our house.  The girls enjoyed watching the other babies and families.  We checked out a few books to bring home.

Sydney is loving the rice cereal now.  The girls are more fun every day.  The smiles, giggles and babbling makes us ridiculously happy.

July 2 ~ Lunch and Park with Pankaj, Susie, Sophie (6) and Max (almost 2).  Pankaj was Mike's college roomate and the best man at our wedding.  They live 3 blocks away.

July 1 ~ Busy day!  This morning we tried rice cereal for the first time.  We thought Sydney would be eager to try because she is so interested in watching us eat.  But surprise...  Syd seemed to think it was weird.  I don't think she swallowed any of it.  Samantha liked it.  She was immediately interested in watching the spoon.  Then she began opening her mouth in anticipation of the spoon.  Good job girls!

We love having an outing scheduled into the day.  We went to San Mateo for lunch and then strolled over to the Toy store.  We picked out a new double stroller.  A side-by-side grey & PINK stroller.  Pros: much easier to drive than our Graco tandem, easier access to storage space underneath, the girls won't have to fight over who gets to sit up front, very lightweight and easy to foldup.  Cons:  It doesn't accept our car seats.  We think it'll be nice to have both types of double stroller.  I ordered it on ebay to save $.

While the girls napped this afternoon, Daddy took a nap and Mommy got a massage.

This evening we strolled over to the Chinese restaurant for dinner.  The owner had Sydney smiling and giggling!  Mike is often worried that Syd isn't as smiley as Sam.  The problem seems to be the time of day Mike sees Syd and her crankiness at that time of day.  Also, Sam just seems to sleep and nap better than her sister.  But when Syd has napped well, she is just as happy!

After baths, Mike fed the girls and put them to bed.  I took Bailey for a walk.  It's been a great day.

Sammy's new "talking" is repeating "ooh" over and over and over again.

Stressful day for mommy (disability and medical records).

June 28 ~ Great day!  Lunch with Susie & Max.  Our house is clean thanks to Dinah & Abraham.  The girls had 2 great naps.  Mike played Ultimate Frisbee.  I took care of the girls solo tonight - including giving them their baths.  Both girls were in the crib at 7:30 and in dreamland before 8pm.

Sydney was smiling at her sister today.  So cute!  Now if we could just get her to enjoy her baths more.  Sam loves baths.  Syd often cries - actually screams.

It's truly amazing how snuggly these babies are.  We try to separate them in the crib, but they always end up snuggled up next to each other.

This new schedule... particularily the more predictable naps is helping so much.  We are all more rested and happier.  The downside is that I have to keep them swinging for the entire nap period.  I'd prefer to be able to turn the swings off.  Hopefully soon we'll be able to wean them from that.  In the meantime, they are getting better everyday at self-soothing.

Mike is making progress with their nighttime wakings.  They are getting less upset.  He is going in less often and for shorter time periods.

Their new favorite (very early) morning activity:  Lifting up their legs high and slamming them down in the crib.  Sam is making a very gleeful sound to go along with this new skill.

June 27 ~ More smiles and giggles!  Sam was really looking at Syd today for the first time.  They have always been snuggly.  But now they are beginning to notice each other.  We can't wait for them to start playing together!

Our new technique for swaddling Sam: one arm free so she can suck on her hand.  But her other arm and legs swaddled to keep her feeling secure.

Tuesdays are often good days.  Maybe it's because I know Mike gets home earlier.  I got alot accomplished today while the girls were napping.

June 26 ~ I've been sick.  Dizzy, sore throat, cold, cough.  Mike has been doing a phenomenal job on very little sleep.  Hopefully the girls won't catch their first cold from me.

June 25 ~ Our new "loveys" are a hit.  Loveys are like security blankets and recommended by some sleep experts to help soothe a baby overnight.  They love to grab and suck them.  Sammy has a lamby.  Sydney has a ducky.  (sorry, Syd.  none of the animals rhymed with your name).  Now, some experts never want anything in the crib with baby.  And while this makes a little nervous.  The benefits outweigh the risks.  Especially since we have Angel Monitors.  These monitors are connected to sensors under crib mattress to monitor breathing.  If there's a problem, an alarm will sound.  Also, Mike took a infant CPR class.

Last night was better.  They had a dream feed at 11pm.  Unfortunately, they were wide awake from 3-6am.  They weren't hungry or unhappy - just not sleepy.  Our favorite book on this topic is from "The Sleep Lady".  She advises shhing and patting, but only picking them if they are screaming.  Mike did an amazing job of keeping them calm and in the crib!

The girls had 2 of their best naps ever today.  Two hours this morning and two hours this afternoon.

June 24 ~ The girls are going through a new phase when they are overtired.  The only way to get them to fall asleep is to allow them to Cry It Out.  None of the other tricks are working.  It's heartbreaking to let them cry, but they are so overstimulated at that point, even holding them makes them scream.  So we are occasionally putting them down (often in the swings) and letting them cry themselves to sleep.  We always rescue them if they begin to scream, but often picking them up makes it worse.

Also, they've been weaning themselves off their pacifiers.  They'd rather put their fingers in their mouths.  This is all good news because they are learning to self soothe and fall asleep on their own.

Yesterday I realized that all my conversations are consumed with the topics of schedules, spitup, etc.  My apologies to friends and family that I'm boring to tears. ;-0

June 23 ~ Today started at 5:30 am.  In my haze of exhaustion and frustration, I've been stressing about the quantity and frequency of the spitups.  At first we focused on the projectile vomiting (which the surgery fixed).  Then the painful spitups (which the zantac helps).  Now I'm realizing how much they actually spit up.  I'm not exagerating when I estimate they spit up 30-40 times per day each.  Spitups happen after almost every burp (on avg 3 burps per feed).  Spitups happen repeatedly throughout the day.  All of these activities increase the spitup:  playing, diaper changes, clothes changes, going into car seats, hiccups, etc.  Basically, the only time they aren't spitting up is when they are sleeping.

One of the most frustrating times is bedtime.  They've been bathed, fed, burped, dressed, snuggled and put down in the crib.  Then *BLAH*.  Now the babies clothes and bedding are soaked.  So then we risk changing them rather than leaving them wet and stinky.

Anyway....  I *bumped* up that "old" picture so we could compare skinny little babies to the big chubs we have now.  They are certainly growing and fattening up enough that I should probably calm down.  Mommy is overtired and overstimulated too!  Can someone give me some gripe water and put me to bed?

June 23 ~ Happy 85th Birthday to Great Grandma!

Samantha & Sydney went to EFI today to visit Daddy's coworkers.

Daddy bought the girls an interactive DVD toy called MagIQ.

Maybe these 2 topics will encourage Mike to add some comments to the website.  hint hint ;-)

June 22 ~ Sam defintely still needs the swaddle.  She kept waking herself up with her flailing arms and kicky legs.

Changing formulas can cause constipation (which actually makes the spitting up worse - all that pushing and grunting).  Not sure what to do next.  Waiting to talk to the pediatrician.

June 21 ~ We are trying a new formula.  Enfamil AR for spitup.  It's so thick that we'll need faster nipples.  So until I get back to the store, we'll mix it 50/50 with the regular Enfamil.  It's too soon to know for sure... but I think we are already seeing some improvement.

Tonight:  Sam & Syd had their first bath together. Samantha is trying to sleep without being swaddled.
