May 11 ~ Favorite clothes. We are finding some baby clothes to be more useful than others. Our biggest issue continues to be spitup. We are changing clothes at almost every diaper change: 7-10 times per day. Since the girls often spitup on the changing table, we've found that the easier the better. We try to avoid clothing that must be pulled over their heads. During the day, we usually dress them in sleepers (or often called sleep-n-plays or footed sleepers). Zippers are faster and easier than snaps. Snaps all the way up the front are better than snaps in the back. At nighttime, the girls wear onsies, socks and Swaddle-me wraps. The new onsies with snaps up the front are our current favorite. Now that it's warmer, for outings, we've been dressing up. We have several very cute dresses thanks to many of our generous family and friends!
May 10 ~ Another "quiet" day at home. I made a little more progress on the thank you notes today. Each day it's a challenge to accomplish the minimum tasks (feed & care for babies, make bottles & baby laundry). The girls are still eating 7-8 times per day. Approximately 3-5 ounces per feed. During the day every 2.5-3.5 hour intervals. On a good night, their last feed is at 11pm... in crib asleep by midnight... and hopefully they don't wake Mike until 5am. The gripe water does seem to help, especially at night. We had a warm weather day. Thank goodness for our new air conditioning!
May 8 ~ Sydney and Samantha attended their first twin club meeting today! While at the hospital, we stopped to visit some of the nurses that cared for us during our 2 week nursery stay. Great-Grandparents returned to Pittsburgh. :-(
May 7 ~ Sam & Syd wore their first dresses today and posed with their first dolls. The girls stayed home with their great-grandparents while Mike & Mel had a dinner date.
May 4 ~ The answer: Sydney is in yellow. Samantha is in white. I can tell them apart by their eyes (distance apart and depth) and head shape. Granny can tell them apart by they chubbiness of their legs. Sam is the chub. ;-)
May 3 ~ Dr. Wall sent us to the hospital for repeat blood work for the girls. In California, there are expanded newborn screening tests. Since the girls had transfusions right after birth, some of the test results were invalid. Unfortunately, the blood tests did not go smoothly. The techs were "practicing" on Sydney. She was screaming. And I yelled at the techs. After the mishap with Syd, Samantha had a better experience.
May 2 ~ Can you tell Samantha and Sydney apart? Which characteristics do you think distinguish them? Check out the new pics and take your best guess. I'll post the answer in a few days. Grandma Cathy and Aunt Cassie think Sydney is in yellow. Are they correct?
May 1 ~ Very rough night for everyone here. And I think I might know why.... For the past week, we've been occasionally been giving "gripe water". It's commonly used in Europe and found here at our local Whole Foods store. It has ginger, fennel and chamomile. It's supposed to help soothe their tummy's and reduce colic. Well, we finished off the bottle Saturday night. So I think (I hope) the absence of this is why the girl's had a rough night. This morning, I darted out to the store to buy more before Mike left for work. Hopefully the "gripe" will grant us more sleep tonight. This afternoon, Aiko (our friend and neighbor) came for a visit with her new baby boy Kai. He's adorable and MUCH quieter than our girls. Our pediatrician called.... The girls need to have their newborn screening tests redone (because the girls had transfusions just after birth, the original results aren't accurate) Another trip to the hospital for more blood work. That'll be a "fun" trip!?! The spit up is showing small signs of improvement Maybe it's the zantac, maybe it's the girls maturing, maybe it's that we are limiting their intake at each feed (or all of the above). The feedings are going more quickly (which is helpful), but we have to be careful not to let them gulp too much too fast. Because that definetly causes spitup. Today while talking to the pediatrican on the phone, I made the mistake of feeding Sam & Syd at the same time. Sam ate too quickly and had 2 big projectile spitups. Mommy screwed up. Sorry Sam!
April 30 ~ Samantha & Sydney had a very good night. They slept from 11:30pm to 5am. Big day out! Sam and Syd's trip to the park with Bailey. And our first meal out (lunch outside at our local cafe). Susie & Pankaj visited us today. (Pankaj was Mike's college roomate and best man.) It's been tough scheduling visits with many of our friends. Most of them have small children. Our pediatrican advises that we try to avoid contact with toddlers and young children (since most are in daycare/preschool and tend to have frequent colds, etc). Since the girls were preemie, had surgeries and don't get breastmilk.... We have to be extra careful to avoid them getting sick. We look forward to spending more time with everyone when the girls get a bit older. Sam and Syd want to snuggle alot - usually at the same time. Which often means one person holding 2 babies at once. Not easy... especially picking them up... even harder... putting the first one back down! The best part of the weekend.... the babies are "talking" alot more... "Coo"
April 29 ~ Today we strolled over to the grand opening of our new library. We've become frequent users of our local libraries over the past couple years. Thankfully, our beautiful library is a short walk from our home. It'll be a fantastic place for the girls to grow up with. They've got a large children's section with a storytime area and also an outdoor play area.
April 29 ~ Granny & Grandpap (sam & syd's great-grandparents) are coming for a visit next week. Our contract with our night nanny, Tracy, has ended. She was a big help when we first brought the girls home and during the surgeries. I'm slowly making progress on the birth announcements and Thank you notes.
April 28 ~ Everyone in the house is sleeping but me. I'm exhausted but unable to fall asleep. The girls are doing well. They are sleeping better most nights. Both still spit up alot. It's frustrating trying things to improve it. Hopefully they outgrow this phase soon. Their screams are much more intense. I've actually had to put in earplugs a few times to lessen the intensity. I've been having chronic headaches and those screams aren't helping! Sydney has been more demanding (and louder) this week. Mike & I are getting great arm muscles from all this lifting, holding, swinging and jiggling. This week when they've been really screaming, there's been only 1 thing that'll work to console them. Holding with a gentle jiggle. A little tiring doing this with 1 baby. Exhausting while trying to hold 2 babies. The girls are more active. They like their playmat and going for walks in the stroller. We are seeing more smiles and coos. Their arms and legs are getting very strong. Sam is enjoying sucking on her hand. Looking forward to a weekend with Mike. The girls LOVE their daddy.
