Ideas for creating a children’s garden

Growing a children’s garden is an easy way to provide a fun and educational hobby for your entire family. And you are in your own backyard! Gardening is an educational way to watch the cycle of life and also builds self confidence in your little ones as they watch the fruits of their labor grow. An added perk is that it may be easier to get your kids to eat healthier foods if they grow the vegetables themselves.

There are just too many possibilities for us to list them all but you can have plants with bright colors, some that have different textures, some that are good for butterfly habitats or everyone’s favorite, the edible garden. We are challenging our BHP members to start a garden with their children in celebration of Earth Day and we would love for you to send us a picture. One lucky winner will win a “Fridge Box”. Go crazy with those themes and we might choose you for a feature!

Some ideas for a kid’s garden:
- Any herb-these can be rubbed to release their fragrance and then taken into the kitchen to be added to meals
- fuzzy lamb’s ears
- snapdragons (it’s fun to make them “talk”)
- moonflowers (it's fun to take a flashlight out to watch the blooms open at night)
- lettuce, cucumbers and radish’s grow quickly for those little impatient gardeners
- pumpkins and corn for those older kids
- sunflowers
- miniature hostas
- marigolds (a care free plant!)
- geraniums

Some tips for a children’s garden: take them with you to pick out the plants and start small, this is for fun not another chore!

Do you have other plants to add to the list? Please send additions to Suggestions@babyhomepages.net. We would love to hear them so that we can update this list on our resource page!
