Stories

3/6/2010: We have been having such a terrible time with getting Lydia to take her nap and go to bed at night. We are all exhausted; it's even disrupted Naomi - and can sleep through a lot. Lydia and I have talked about heaven different times, but you never know what kids remember. Day before yesterday I commented that I had a kink in my neck. Lydia told me that "Probably God will make it better in heaven where we will have nude (new) bodies and a new head." :) She was coughing this morning and I said that I hoped she wasn't getting sick. Her reply, "I just cough every day. I not sick."

Naomi rolls everywhere! She'll roll until she bumps into something and gets mad b/c she can't go any further. Sometimes she'll get against the couch and her arm will get under the couch and she gets stuck that way. Lydia and I are also constantly moving small objects out of her reach. She's getting quite good at reaching and grabbing. What fun!

2/20/2010: I had some summer clothes out for Lydia to try on and she loved parading around and putting on quite an act with each new outfit. When she came to her swimsuit, though, she didn't know what to think of it. She rubbed her suit and then asked me where her clothes were. I told her those were her clothes for swimming. Then she looked down at her bare legs and asked, "What goes on my legs?" I explained that nothing did, but she didn't believe me and asked again what she was supposed to put on her legs. :) Lydia likes to lick her finger to turn pages when reading a story...the funny thing is that she puts her whole finger in her mouth to do it. She likes to say, "neato the 'squito", meaning neato mosquito - something her daddy says a lot. When we passed a particular church with a fun-looking playground, Lydia wanted to know why we don't go there. I told her they didn't believe the Bible. She said in reply, "We need to go there to teach them. That's what the Bible says."

Naomi is such a sweet, smiling baby! She has started reaching for things purposefully now, with 2 hands. I can hardly read a story to Lydia with her in my lap anymore b/c she reaches for the pages and tries to eat them.

02/12/2010: Naomi had her 4 month check-up Wednesday and had to get 2 more shots and an oral. She didn't feel so well the rest of the day and into yesterday, but seems to be fine today. She has gained quite a bit and now weighs 14 pounds 4.5 ounces! (In looking back at my notes, that is about how much Lydia weighed when she was 6 months old!)She also grew almost 2 inches and is now 25 inches long. No wonder I'm having a hard time finding clothes to fit her! I've been putting some of Lydia's 6 month clothes on Naomi and they fit pretty well. They're a little bit, but not much!

Lydia is also outgrowing a fair number of her winter clothes. Right now all she wants to wear are her twirling dresses. She told me this week that I could put her stool up (the one she uses in the bathroom to reach the sink and potty) because she was a big girl. Yesterday when she was singing (at the top of her lungs a hodge podge of songs all mixed in to one song) and I asked her to sing a little bit quieter, she said, "But I'm singing to Jesus, Mommy."

01/06/2010: Naomi rolled over yesterday. It was really more of a flop; she was on her tummy and elbows on the soft bed, and plop, over she went!

As much as Lydia talks, sometimes our conversations are so confusing! This one happened yesterday while we were sitting at a traffic light.
Lydia- What was wrong with that car? (It had a dent in it.)
me-It must have been in an accident.
Lydia-Ben was in a accident?
me-No, that car was.
Lydia-What car?
:)

This morning my voice was a bit hoarse and Lydia asked, "Is there a frog in your stomach? How can he get out?"

12/24/09: Merry Christmas!
Naomi tries to sit up/forward when she's leaned back or laying down. She can actually lift her shoulders up off whatever she's against. I have to keep an eye on her already if I have her propped up on the couch!
Lydia keeps us chuckling with her questions and comments. She was watching a video Dad had of some of the bush spirits in Senegal, and she asked, "What are those trees doing?" One night when we were praying before bedtime, Lydia interupted to tell her daddy to close his eyes. When he replied that she should close hers, she said "I can't". I asked her why not. Her logical reply was, "Because they're open." A few days ago Lydia asked me where Naomi was when she (Lydia) was in my tummy. When I told her Naomi wasn't anywhere yet, Lydia of course couldn't understand that. She thought for a minute then asked, "Was she in Jesus' tummy?"

12/5/09: Thanksgiving was wonderful. The girls and I, along with my parents flew to Wisconsin to visit family. This was Naomi's first plane trip and  Lydia's 2nd. Both girls did very well; Lydia was excited about it. She remember getting a "treat" - a snack and juice - on the plane and kept asking about it until they finally brought it around. Unfortunately Lydia came down with a pretty bad cold while up there and passed it on to her sister. No fun! Lydia kept pretty close to me with all the new faces. She liked Grandma Satorius' canary a lot and Aunt Mary's 2 dogs.

11/9/09: Update on the girls

Lydia continues to grow by leaps and bounds. She can count to 20 with just a prompt or two, knows her street address and her birthday. She also thinks she is so sneaky. The other day when Lydia was picking her nose (again) and I reminded her to go get a kleenex. She shook her head and said: "Go away, Mommy." Another time her response was, "Close your eyes, Mommy." It was hard not to laugh. I hear myself mimiced all day long as she plays with her dolls - changes their diapers, feeds them, rocks them and sings to them. She even told one doll that when it got bigger its cord would fall off and it would have a bellybutton like her. Lydia's great with Naomi - she likes to help change her diaper, get her dressed and hold her. She also has quite an imagination. We came across some animal tracks when we were out walking. I thought maybe they were racoon. Lydia said, pointing to the tracks, Those are racoon and those are me when I was little when I was a racoon. :) When we were praying last night she stopped in the middle to tell Daddy to close his eyes. :)

Naomi is already a month old - wow! She is starting to stay awake for longer periods of time during the day and is very alert when she is awake. She is constantly looking around, taking it all in. She focuses better on objects and if I move my head from one side to the other, she'll try to follow me with her eyes. She has also started trying to reach for objects and will grasp things (my shirt or hair, a toy hanging in front of her). I know the reaching and grasping are still pretty random and unplanned, but it's fun to see.

10/7/09: Well, Naomi's "due date" has come and gone...apparently she is in no more hurry than her big sister was to be born. So, we wait anxiously to meet our little girl.

Meanwhile, Lydia keeps us in stiches and sometimes scrambling for answers with her comments and questions. Her latest bed time put off, after we've gone through the whole ritual and are about to walk out, is this: "I need something." What do you need, Lydia? "I need something." Like what, Lydia? Then there's a long pause while she tries to come up with something that mommy and daddy have perhaps not already offered her. Today it was hand sanitizer. Where does she come up with this stuff?

A little while ago she asked me, as we were eating lunch, "Where is God?" And another time, "What is God doing?" When I said "who?" b/c it sounded like she said 'dog' and I thought she was asking about our neighbor's dogs, she rephrased her question and asked, "What is Jesus doing?" My brilliant startled response was, "you mean right now?" Of course she meant right now. Is there any other time in the mind of a 2 year old? I don't even remember now what I told her, but it seemed to satisfy her.

She has started giving her dolls names, which may change daily or even hourly. The winner of all names so far is King Maggi after the chicken maggi I was writing at the time on my grocery list. :)

8/1/09: We had our first incident of Lydia sticking something up her nose (something besides her finger, that is). She shoved a small ball of playdo up one nostril and I was beginning to wonder if I was going to be able to get it out! Fortunately it came out, and it caused her a fair bit of a discomfort so hopefully she won't do that again (at least not anytime soon).

We have been having so much trouble getting her to go to bed at night that we resorted to bribery, and it seems to be working. I overheard her "talking" to my friend Rene' on a toy phone. This is how her conversation went: "Ms. Ne', Noah come over today? (pause) Okay...yeah. I get ice cream if stay in my bed all night. (pause) Ice cream all mine. Madison say 'Oh my'. (laughs)....So, there you have it - in her own words. :)

I heard another funny conversation earlier that day between Lydia and her daddy. Chris: "What is in your mouth, Lydia?" Lydia: "A booder". Chris (sounding worried): "A what? What's in your mouth?" Lydia: "I swallowed a booder, daddy." In case you didn't figure it out, a "booder" is a booger. :)

One last funny - I was shaving my arm pits and Lydia of course wanted me to shave hers. I told her she didn't need to shave, she didn't have any hair. She looked at her arm pit and very indignantly told me, "Yes, mommy, I do. See?" So, I obligingly turned the razor over and "shaved" her pits for her. :) She was quite happy.

7/16/09: We've been setting an alarm clock for 6 AM in an effort to get Lydia to stay in bed AT LEAST until 6! (So far it hasn't worked too well. But that's another story.) She came in about quarter till the other day, and I asked her if her alarm had gone off. She looked at me, shrugged her shoulders a bit and said, "Figured it went off. Timer went beep beep. Figured it went off." (Where did she get that from? Firgured it went off!?!)

Every time Lydia eats goldfish crackers she points out to me that they don't have a face. It really seems to bother her, b/c she'll check almost every one in her bowl.

7/7/09: Growing up stories - Lydia gave me a bit of a start the other day. She had asked for some oatmeal for a snack (her favorite food lately), and I told her I would look to see if there was any left from breakfast in just a minute. I walked back to my room to put away the load of laundry I was carrying and heard her making quite a bit of noise in the kitchen. I walked out to see what she was doing, and there she was, standing on her step ladder, with the fridge door open, pointing and stretching to her bowl saying, "I see oatmeal, Mommy." How she got the door open I still can't figure out.

She (and Chris) love to blow schwerberts on "baby sister". She covered my stomach with stickers yesterday "for baby sister". She offered me a cracker for baby sister, and when I ate it she looked at me so shocked and offended and said sternly, "that baby sister's!" It was all I could do not to laugh. I told her mommy eats it and it goes down into my tummy where baby can eat it. That seemed to satisfy her.

Lydia is still such a little mommy to her dolls. While I was wrapping one of her dolls in a blanket for her, she admonished me: "careful. careful with baby." Then after she took the doll from me, she walked around bouncing and shushing the doll because "baby crying."

Lydia's going to be a wonderful big sister, Linda. Maybe she'll do all the work for you! :)

6/20/09: Lydia is now 2 and talks so much - whole paragraphs. She is also very inquisitive. I hear "Why?" more times than I can count, and "What _____ doing?" (papa, daddy, kitty, baby sister...the list is endless.)  :)

We love to hear her pray with us/over us (?) at meal time and bedtime. When I asked her one day who made her, she replied "God". When I questioned her further about what else God made she told me "worms, birds". (The essential things in life.) :)

She is paying more attention to my growing tummy. But when we suggest different names for baby, she just shakes her head and says "baby".

We are still trying to adjust to being back home from our long vacation at the Grand Canyon. While she didn't care about the immensity of the canyon, she did enjoy the mule statue, petting live mules and dogs, the petting farm, and the numerous birds and squirrels that were around. One afternoon Chris took her out for a walk (she had her baby doll with her). Apparently she got tired of carrying baby, but Chris wasn't going to carry the doll either, so she put it on the ground and said, "Crawl, baby!"

Hey, Linda! I don't have your good e-mail address so just wondering if you all will make it to Bradley's party next Friday. Trying to get a final count.
Love the "crawl baby" comment at the canyon. That is too funny!

4/3/09: Big News....Lydia is going to be a big sister! Most of the time she doesn't say much about the baby, but occasional comments come out. Last night she held out her arms and said "hold baby tummy". When I told her the baby wasn't big enough to hold yet, she was quite distressed. How cute! The other big news is that Lydia has been completely potty trained now for about a month- yahoo! She even did well on our trip over to Pell City a few weeks ago (I had to stop 3 times on the way for her to use the potty.)

Let's see, what else has been going on. She hasn't slept well in a couple weeks. I'm not sure why. Somehow she got off schedule and then got sick, so she can't seem to get back on schedule. Hopefully soon since she seems to be feeling much better today. She helped me plant some sunflower seeds and garlic this morning, then I made some cinnamon tea and honey bread for us to have a tea party. She just gets to be more fun every day!

3/6/09: Growing up: Lydia is starting to prefer doing things herself, whether it's singing, counting, spooning food into her bowl or pulling up her pants. She'll tell me, "My do it, Mommy."

She has now gone for a full 7 days with zero potty accidents! I'm so excited!!!!!!!!!!!! I take her diaper off shortly after breakfast in the morning and after she gets up from her naps and put her undies (she calls them "unnies") on. Even when we play outside for a long time, she's been fine. I just make sure we go in the house after periodically for a potty break. Could this really be the beginning of the end? :)

Lydia likes to count objects around the house, in her books, or trucks that we pass on the road. Sometimes she gets her numbers correct up to 10 and sometimes she mixes up the last few, but it's fun listening to her. She knows so many words to her songs and notices so much going on around her. The other day at supper time she heard some birds outside. She said, "Birds. High in sky (pointing up)." When we blow bubbles and they go up out of her reach, she'll point up and say, "High. Wind." with a serious nod of her head. Sometimes when the wind is rustling the leaves she'll point them out to me, saying, "wind ooooo leaves". If I ask her where we get milk, eggs, and honey from, she can tell me.

Yesterday she accidently ran into the cat with her stroller. She leaned down and said, "Sorry kitty. Sorry." :)
