“Mean Mom” strikes again. Recently Makayla has been having nightmares and kept telling us that Evil witch from Snow White was in her dreams or that Mother Gothel from Tangled was taking her out of her bed at night. She was scared to stay upstairs by herself and you could tell she was tired in the morning. So me being the awesome mom that I am start informing her that they are not real people it is just a movie. So a few days later on our way to dance Makayla asks, “Is Olivia real?” “No she is just a cartoon on a show I have never seen a talking pig.”, “Oh that’s true so Angelina Ballerina is pretend because a mouse doesn’t talk.” “Yep, just pretend.” (in my mind I am thinking ok so maybe you get this now, but please don’t ask about Santa.) “The evil witch is pretend right?” “Yes, she is just part of a movie.” “But you said Mother Gothel is pretend but she really does look like a lady.” “Yes I know but she is not real.” “Is Snow White real?” “no” “Is Rapunzel real?” and you can hear a little sadness in her voice. “ummm..no but she has a really good story we love to listen to.” (insert big reassuring mom smile) as I look in the rear view mirror to see that I have just crushed my daughter. Great now I feel like crap. “But mom Cinderella’s song says that Dreams do Come True.” Oh Disney how have you gotten to her already and how am I suppose to fix this without crushing her but making sure the nightmares end?? “Yes that is true but Tiana’s dad told her that you can dream and you can wish on the evening star but you have to help that dream to come true. Right?” I am proud of myself thinking I fixed this without totally knock all of her ideals. I try changing the subject. “Well Tiana’s dad dies before he can make his dream come true so he needed to dream harder.” Silence, not sure how to respond and I am wishing that I would stop getting red lights. “So mom are princesses real?” “Yes there is a real princess in London, her name is Kate.” “I haven’t seen her movie. What about Cinderella or Ariel?” Well since I was already being truthful “No they are not.” She rode in silence for the last 5 minutes, waited for her class to start in silence, and did not talk to me until we got home later. She had tears in her eyes and I felt horrible. I try to tell Jesse about all of this while using big words and gestures so if she asks him later that night he knows that the damage has already been done and he gives me a “how could you do that look?” Yep that’s me mean mom stomping on little girls dreams of being a princess.
